Spreen increases points lead with another second-place finish

Twelve-year-old Dillon Spreen (Boerne) did exactly what Spreen Racing Team owners Greg and Cherie Spreen wanted. The youngster grabbed a second-place finish (his parents were hoping for a top-5 finish) at Corpus Christi Speedway last Saturday night.

"Dillon had three good practices," Cherie Spreen explained. "He started off a little loose in the first practice; but Greg tightened up the car for the last two practices. The Legacys didn't qualify until 7:30 p.m. so the track cooled off quite a bit before Dillon qualified. His car was a little too loose for qualifying so he qualified seventh out of 15 cars."

With the invert, Spreen started the feature on the front row outside

(the second spot). Spreen was able to grab the lead from the outside

after the first lap and led nine laps. However, the #81 South

Bay/Spreen Racing Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo loosened up and

Spreen struggled with it for a couple of laps, falling back to third

place in the process.

The Boerne youngster would eventually retake second place with five

laps to go and finished there as Jeff Weir (Houston) took the

checkered flag. Spreen, though, gained three points on second place

driver Jake Kruger with his second-place finish at Corpus; he takes a

674-641 lead into this Saturday's action at Thunder Hill Raceway.

"We are very happy with Dillon's second-place finish," Greg Spreen stated. "Our goal was to come away from Corpus with a top-5 finish and the driver and car in one piece. We accomplished that. We made quite a few changes going into this race. Normally the car tightens up before the end of a race but it actually got loose for this race, so we made a few minor changes."

Cherie Spreen added, "We're looking forward to going to Thunder Hill this weekend. We'd also like to thank and congratulate the Yoakems for their efforts at Corpus. The track was in great shape; we know they put a lot of time and hard work into the place. We enjoyed our time down there and everyone involved with Corpus Christi Speedway have reason to be proud."
