Randy Lee Scores Wins Wire to Wire at Thunder Hill Raceway

 

Randy Lee of Corpus Christi made it look easy Saturday night at Thunder Hill Raceway. Lee drove his potent Ford Mustang to a convincing 3.9 second victory over points-leader Bill LaBarge of Bryan in the 20-lap Texas Pro Sedan feature at the tricky, one-third-mile, D-shaped track in Kyle.

 

Lee started from the outside pole, next to pole-sitter Sergio Hexsel of San Antonio who took the first heat in his VW Scirocco. Lee out powered Hexsel to the first turn and never looked back, winning by nearly four seconds over Bryan’s Bill LaBarge in a BMW. LaBarge, who started eighth in the 15-car field, steadily worked his way towards the front but was never able to mount a serious charge on the defending TPS Champion.

 

San Antonio’s Jamie Garner made an impressive return to competition after demolishing his Scirocco two weeks earlier at San Antonio Speedway and spending the night in a San Antonio hospital with chest injuries. Garner obtained a 2001 WV Sedan, installed his still-usable engine and ran a strong third after racing closely with Hexsel and Corpus Christi’s Lalo Leal for most of the event.

 

The only caution of the race came on the third lap when a fire broke out in the engine compartment of Jack Dishman’s Ford Mustang.

 

Dishman also had problems in his heat race. The Devine driver was passing Sergio Hexsel for the lead late in the race when their cars made contact that resulted in the left front tire on Dishman’s Mustang going flat. Dishman was somehow managed to stay in front for the remaining few laps despite the disintegrating tire and being black-flagged for three consecutive laps. The apparent win was disallowed, however, because he failed to heed the black flag and retire to the pits.
