Wimberley's Mitchell Debuts New Patriot Car Wash Modified with Top-Five Finish in USRA Texas Asphalt Modified Series at San Antonio Speedway

San Antonio – Trey Mitchell of Wimberley began his 2006 racing season with a top-five finish at San Antonio Speedway Saturday night in his first drive in the Patriot Car Wash Chevrolet. Against a small field in the opening round of the United States Racing Association (USRA) Texas Asphalt Modified Series (TAMS), the 16-year-old began only his third year of racing with a strong run in the light weight, 350-horsepower modified stock car, finishing fifth behind first time winner Billy Becka of La Vernia and 2005 TAMS champion Bruce Beddoe of Robstown.

The modified is a jump up from the 125-horsepower Allison Legacy car he drove to rookie of the year honors in the Long Star Legacy Series in 2005. Mitchell will run the entire USRA-TAMS schedule in 2006 as well as race for the Lone Star Legacy championship again this season after finishing third in 2005. The Wimberley High School junior was philosophical after the race.

"I was just glad I got through the weekend without hitting anything," he smiled. "We only had two practice sessions in the car, one at Thunder Hill Raceway and one at San Antonio Speedway, before we came back to San Antonio for the race. The car was a real handful, tight in the middle of the corners and loose coming off, and the stuff we did that should have made it better just made it worse. I think something in the suspension is bent or binding."

Mitchell hadn't expected to start the season at San Antonio because this race was originally scheduled for Corpus Christi Motor Speedway, where Mitchell ran twice last year. It's a track he likes, and he has only one previous race at San Antonio Speedway. But the USRA had to move the Corpus Christi race date to San Antonio and will run at Corpus Christi later in the year.
