Garrett Dominates July 4th ARTS Event

(Red River Speedway - Wichita Falls, TX)

July 4, 2003

Jon T. Garrett from Tyler, TX, and the #66 Rose City Racing Team was back on top of the game at Wichita Falls' Red River Speedway on July 4th. Because of a back injury, Jon missed the previous ARTS (Allstar Race Truck Series) event on June 28th at Thunder Hill Speedway in Kyle, TX.

The team made adjustments to the truck through practice all afternoon as the crew changed shocks, springs, tires, and air pressure. In time trials the work shined through as Jon topped the field with the fastest time of 15.136 seconds around the asphalt speedway. Garrett edged out Jon Denham by .083 seconds for the Top Qualification. Denham was using a motor borrowed from the Rose City Racing Team.

Jon led his heat race, from the pole, flag to flag for the win. He then had to draw for starting position for the feature and he drew a #1 to start on the pole.

As the green flag fell Jon T. Garrett shot his #66 Chevy into the lead with #10 Robert Walton in tow as #26 Jon Denham who started on the outside front row got hung out of the groove losing several positions down the back straight. Later in the race Denham was sent to the rear of the field after contact with the #30 of Bryan Meredith.

The field was running fairly close through the race but Garrett was bumped from behind by the #2 Blake Harris on a restart. Jon then pulled away from the field extending his lead lap after lap. It was clear no one had anything for him. Every single truck in the field, except for Garrett, had glowing front brake rotors at one time or another during the 50 lap event showing that Jon was not over driving his truck.

Late in the race the #26 of Denham was making a move towards the front. He was passing trucks on the high side coming out of turn 2 when he hit the outside wall and gate then his throttle hung wide open as he went into three causing heavy contact with the outside wall. The truck didn't look healthy but Denham did crawl out and walk away unharmed.

The #66 of Garrett again pulled away from the field and led to the end after the last restart as #2 Blake Harris, #30 Bryan Meredith, and #52 Steve Green had an interesting battle to finish in that order. The #17 of Dusty Tutten rounded out the top 5.

This is the 2nd win of 2003 for Jon Garrett in the ARTS Lone Star Region. The 2 wins plus 3 other top 5 finishes this year keeps him in the points battle, even after missing an event. Robert Walton leads the Lone Star Region points race with Jon Denham in second. Keith Patrick and Bryan Meredith are behind Garrett in the 4th and 5th positions.
