Garrett Wins ‘Fall Brawl’ Sportsman 50-lapper after Oates Wrecks Late

San Antonio, TX (November 20, 2005) – San Antonio Speedway regular Keith Garrett of New Braunfels took on a strong 19-car field of San Antonio Speedway Sportsman, Thunder Hill Raceway Street Stock and Corpus Christi Motor Speedway Super Street stock cars Saturday night at San Antonio Speedway’s ‘Fall Brawl’ and came home with the win.

Garrett qualified with the second-fast time in time trials (21.41 seconds), but started the 50-lap feature at the half-mile, high-banked oval in the fourth spot after drawing the number “four” in the pre-race inversion draw. Tater Mason of San Antonio set fast time (21.24 seconds) in time trials, but drew the number “six” and started in that position.

Thunder Hill regular Clint LaFont of Volente (21.89 seconds) started on the pole next to Frank Johnson of San Antonio (21.46 seconds), but it was Johnson who grabbed the early lead as the green flag waved. Former NASCAR Sunbelt Champion Justin Oates of San Antonio quickly grabbed the second spot and started to work on Johnson’s back bumper. Oates, however, had to keep an eye on the mirror at the same time because Garrett and Mason were right on his tail, part of a four-car pack that ran bumper-to-bumper for several laps.

On the eighth circuit Oates gave the Johnson Camaro a little nudge that allowed Oates, Garrett and Mason enough room on the inside to freight train by to move Johnson back to fourth.

In spite of several caution periods – mostly for minor spins – Oates and Garrett slowly pulled away from Mason and Johnson who were locked in a torrid battle for third until Mason suddenly slowed with 20 laps remaining.

Oates had things pretty much his way until he and Garrett attempted to pass a lapped car with two laps remaining. Oates grazed one of them as they exited turn two and hit the back straight wall a ton, ending his night and nearly demolishing his car.

Garrett then easily outpowered Johnson on the green-white-checkered restart to claim the $1,000 first place prize money and a nice trophy. Following Johnson to the line on the lead lap were LaFont and Clint Montanio of Cibolo.
