  1. Thanks Larry,

     

    I don't recall the modified running at all and maybe someone out there can help us out here..

     

    Lee Hutchinson did not live near me but his younger brother did and that's why I was thinking this car belonged to Lee. At least his younger brother claimed it was Lee's although I think we both agree that Lee never drove this car.

     

    It appears it had a 427 FORD engine in it at one time.

     

    In 1967 I remember Paul Maire driving a RED '37 Chevy that was numbered with a big white 2 and had silver wheels.

     

    He pitted near Charlie Ray on the front stretch as I also recall he didn't drive it for long..

     

    Well, at least we found the long lost photos I've been looking for.. :rolleyes:

  2. The Late Bubba Nolan 1968

     

    Attending Meyer Speedway was always interesting although, if I could turn back the hands of time I would have made sure I carried my camera more often.

     

    This was taken in the pits in the spring of 1968.

     

    Pictured below is fellow quarter midget drivers Larry Robertson on the left and Bubba Nolan on the right with his '55 Chevy Bronco.

     

    Bubba used the same number on his quarter midget in the late 50's.

    In the background you will see David Tennison with Blue Shirt on. David drove quarter midgets for a short period of time also as car # 3

  3. San Antonio 1960

     

    The photo below was taken from a far distance and I have tried to edit and focus the photos the best I could

     

    On the very first page of this thread are shots from San Antonio and this one was recently found to add to the event.

     

    This is the starting line up and the first 4 midgets are Pacemakers with the one on the pole #4 winning this event.

     

    Directly behind him is myself in #85 and beside me is Doug McBride.

     

    Behind Doug is Denny Burton and not seen on the inside of Denny and directly behind me was Larry Schild.

     

    Maybe Doug can come on board and refresh my memory of the car and driver on the outside front row.

    The pole setter had set the fasted time and was very fast in the feature race which he took honors..

     

    I started third and finished in the same position..

  4. Larry,

     

    Sometime back and earlier on this original thread, you and I had a discussion on a Bronco driver named Hutchinson that drove the #90 Bronco at Meyer Speedway.

     

    I had also mentioned that he had a '38 Chevy modified parked in front of his parents house on the north side of Houston. (Refer to page 6)

     

    Well, I finally ran across a couple of photos and here they are below.

     

    The chassis is seen here but without any power plant and from my understaning this was to be Hutchinsons modified ride for the '68 season originally but, don't think he ever drove it for one thing and the other is, we don't know what became of this modified after it left his home.

     

    The photos were taken in the winter months of '67 or early spring of '68..

     

    Could this car have been Buddy Evans old modified?

    In further review, it looks also like the car that McKenzie later drove as the #31 Modified that we discussed that could have been the old 75..? Look at the hood scoop..

     

    Wished I had one like this sitting in my drive way right now..

    Are you sure AJ sponsored the #2 of Larry Schild in 72?

     

    I didn't think AJ got involved until the # 50 was launched ?? :blink:

     

    We need to get Larry Schild on this thread to get is input also.

     

    Don't know if he can handle a computer unless he is strapped in a Kirkland racing seat..

    In all honesty, I can't say I remember that night but I sorta faded from Meyer Speedway after 1975 and just prior to that my attendance was not all that good.

     

    Life got real busy..

     

    Maybe Larry can help us out here.

  8. Well,

     

    Sounds pretty close guys except a few corrections that I recall.

     

    First, Larry Schild was driving the AJ Foyt sponsored 69 Chevelle, Orange number 50.

     

    I was told the chassis was built by Banjo Mathews

     

    Jerry Schild would be driving the 65 Chevelle number 7.

     

    I do recall Larry winning just about every feature race in 72-73 time frame.

     

    My input would be Cronin and Schild taking the honors with what I remember or perhaps Plowman although I think it was Cronin in the 65 Chevelle painted either Maroon and White or Red and White number 13

     

    I remember a race when Bobby Allison was there with the Coke sponsored Chevelle and Cronin was in the same race. I have film somewhere of that event and will try and get it posted as soon as I find it.

     

    If I recall, the big push was to beat Allison since he was a visitor at Meyer and also a "Big Dog" name to humiliate with a local boy to strip him down to size.

     

    A lot of racing fuel used on that half mile..

  9. Well..

     

    Raced in Dallas in 1956 and part of 57 since there were no tracks in Houston at the beginning of my career.

     

    Soon afterward, Gulfgate track opened in Houston and we started racing there.

     

    Amazing, I didn't see that either..

     

    Midget 76 was under construction when that was printed but it never raced in Dallas. Only the number 7 midget.

    I'm still a little fuzzie on the night Charlie went over the wall and it has been a few years.

     

    For some reason I keep thinking it was a Fiat bodied modified but certainly not certain. I do remember a few Henry J Fords however.

    When you google always refer to "Meyer" Speedway.

     

    It has often been referred to as Meyers but as long as I went out there I never saw an "S" added to Meyer..

     

    Joseph F. Meyer built Meyerland Shopping Center as well for those that were not familiar with the history.

     

    Welcome to Lone Star Speedzone and good to see you here finally.

    Welcome to Lone Star Speedzone and the Quarter Midget forum.

     

    Judging by the photo above it looks as though you have a "Racecraft" midget here instead of a Wahlborg.

     

    Is the tail section still with the car?

     

    The current motor has replaced the original continental engine over the years. Looks to be a Briggs and Straton power plant.

     

    Gear box reduction eliminated any big sprockets on the rear axle and they were required to be located inside the rear turtle hull for any competition use. ( safety factor )

     

    Looks as though it has seen a lot of usage off the track.

     

    Always resale value depending on the condition of the little midget and correct pieces.
