I saw the Race on Texas write up that stated Cody Smith won the Limited Mod Feature. There were rumors around the pits that Kulhanek was going to be DQ'd but I'm going by myracepass and the South Texas Race Ranch website where they still have Kulhanek as the winner. He definitely took the checkered flag first on the track so if he was DQ'D, Cody Smith would be the South Texas Shootout Champion as his was second on the track and was coming. A late yellow or maybe 10 more laps and things would have been interesting or as Owen likes to say, things would have gotten Western. Either way, think it was a very successful weekend with a lot of laps, a lot of cars and a lot of hard work by everyone involved and even with the late hours, was very fun to watch.

Features Recap
The expected cold front blew in just before Feature racing began and may have been a factor as the track slicked off rapidly for the mains. The EMod Feature was first in line and they had several attempts to get it started. Numerous cautions plagued the EMod Feature but once we got rolling, Daniel Preston was clearly the class of the field. He had an early challenge from Caden Valenta but would cruise to a fairly easy victory and burned the tires in an impressive victory lane burnout and his signature Steve Austin celebration. Valenta settled for second, Brianna Witzsche, Jaden Edmond, and Jett Johnson drastically improved from their starting position (9, 13, and 14 positions respectively) to round out the top 5.
Pure Stocks took the track next and Donald Cain drove from the pole in the Chuck Barber owned 19B, taking full advantage of starting p1 and never looked back. Cameron Starry could put some pressure but Cain never wavered and claimed the $1000 paycheck. Cain, Starry, Jamie Dear, Andy Van Blarcum and Hudson Mikulencak were the top 5 in this one.
Micro Mods took the track third and were the only class to run all green laps. Gilbert Perez III did what he's done all year in this class and dominated winning by nearly 3/4 of a lap. Michael Lindsey was a distant second, Andy Anderson, Bill Six and Cory Harding rounded out the top 5.
The IMCA Modified, $2000 to win would roll out next for their main event of the evening next. Steve Whiteaker Jr would pace this field like he has done for several years in the Modified and Limited Modified and take the checkers. He had an early challenge from Dalton Knox but no real threat to be overtaken. Knox held on for second followed by Tanner Whitmire, Ryan Doyon and Logan Dinsmore.
The $5000 to win Feature Event in Limited Modified entered the track next for their 50 lap showcase. Similar to EMods, it took several attempts to get this one started and unfortunately for Ralo Pilkington, he was involved in almost every melee early on, including a first lap wreck in four that took out or damaged several cars. Once the green stayed out, Ray Allen Kulhanek was in a different zip code. No one could keep pace with him as he scored redemption from a last lap nightmare at his last shootout attempt. Nathan Titzman held Dean Abbey off for a long time but a hard charging Cody Smith got around both in the final 10 or so laps and was closing in on Kulhanek but ran out of laps. Young hot shoe Titzman settled for third, Abbey fourth and Marcus Mikulencak fifth. Kulhanek led all 50 laps and was very excited to be called a South Texas Shootout Champion.
Co-headlining Factory Stocks rolled out for their $3000 to win race and again Kulhanek would lead the field to green. Kulhanek led the first few laps facing heavy pressure from Johnny Torres and Dalton Faulkner. Entering turn one around lap 5, Torres made solid contact with Kulhanek and Kulhanek lost power and was shuffled out of the way. Hard to say if Kulhanek broke before or after the contact with Torres but regardless, Kulhanek's bid for a sweep ended. Torres knew he had to be on his horse though with the ever dangerous Faulkner all over his bumper. Torres would lead several laps before Faulkner got under Torres and took the lead. Once out front Faulkner would never relinquish and parked it pocketing another big money win. Torres was in his all too familiar runner up position followed by Jared Maupin, an out of nowhere Brian Rye and longtime no see Craig Oakes.
The Late Models rolled out next to conclude the South Texas Shootout with Dean Abbey and Robbie Starnes leading the field to green. Starnes was hooked up tonight and led most of the race. Jared Maupin in just his second Late Model appearance, would take the lead near the midpoint and looked poised to take his first Late Model victory but got briefly tangled with a lap car. Starnes pounced on the opportunity and regained the lead with around 5 to go and held on for the win. Maupin would hold on to a disappointing second with Abbey a distant third, Marcus Mikulencak fourth and Chase Neil rounding out the top 5.
Track was a challenge and was similar to asphalt, hammer down the straightaway and hard on the brakes to hold the bottom line. If you got shuffled out of the bottom groove, you would get freight trained but with that being said, the track remained fast, led to some physical, entertaining racing and honestly held up well with over 200 cars racing a couple hundred laps over the past few nights. The 2023 season has come to a close and 2024 looks to be another great year for Texas racing. Until next season, I wish you all a Happy and Safe Holiday Season and will see you all in a few months at a race track somewhere. Congratulations to all the South Texas Shootout Champions and thank you Owen Pittman and the rest of the South Texas Race Ranch crew for a great weekend and a great season.

My apologies to anyone reading this, battery down to 5% with the EMod 2 hour Feature. Will try to recap the action after battery dies when I get a charge. You can keep up with Race on Texas and Myracepass for Results when my phone dies.

Frustration setting in as I think the longest green flag run has been 2 laps. Have a feeling this one may be getting cut short.

Red flag for Sam Chapa as he flipped down the backstretch, driver is ok. Preston pulls away when we get green laps, Valenta and Titzman battling hard for 2nd, Witzsche, Jackson and Edmond top 5 with about 5 complete

Big mess down the back straightaway Freeman hits the outside wall clips Canales, few others spin to avoid. Preston with early lead.

Sloppy start as Flanagan enters 1 real high and gets collected by Thompson. Flanagan retires, Thompson pulls off, complete restart.

Guess the rumor ended up true, another heartbreaking Shootout for Kulhanek, as Cody Smith is now the official winner. Sad for Kulhanek but congratulations to Cody Smith.
