Final Points Night/DTK Memorial @ I-37 Speedway 10/29-30/21

By JM Hallas

Pleasanton, TX.,(Oct. 29Th, 2021) Double your pleasure, double your fun…

…..With two nights of racing action at I-37 Speedway, the ¼ mile, semi-banked, dirt track just south of Pleasanton.

Friday kicked off a big racing weekend with the conclusion of the 2021 points season for the Limited Modifieds, Late Models, Factory Stocks and Sport Compacts. The race originally scheduled for the first of the month got postponed by mother nature, then delayed by conflicting big, year ends shows.

It's been since mid-September since some of the drivers saw action, while others ran out-of-town shows to keep the rust knocked off. Tonight's action would finalize the 2021 points championships for four of the regulars classes.

The regular season ended last month for the IMCA sanctioned Modifieds with Ryan Doyon overtaking Jared Maupin, who missed the final two races due to illness. Cody Clark, Stephen Boubel and defending track champ, Rick Green rounded out the top five.

The Limited Modifieds show Sterling Tausch with a pretty much insurmountable edge over Jared Maupin, Tom Grothues, Edward Oakes and Nathan Oakes.

In the Late Models it's still close with de facto teammates Brandon Brzozowski and Kody Hardage separated by only 10 spots, Landon Sowder is third 21 out, while Barry Quade and Jason Kelly complete the top five.

The Factory Stocks had a good season-long battle between Dakota Hurley and Dillon Gaither. Da. Hurley has been able stretch his margin to 17 over the past couple events, while brother, Dustin Hurley sits third, George Quintanilla fourth and Jarrett Payton battling with Aaron Leddy for fifth, one point apart.

Despite dominating most of the season, Ryan McDonald only holds a 17 marker advantage over former champ, Jamie Garner in the Sport Compacts. Brandon McCall, Ryker Hernandez and Justin Sitterle fill out the front five.

Racing continues Saturday night(7:00pm) with the DTK Memorial highlighted by big payouts for the Factory Stock($2,000), IMCA Modifieds and Limited Modifieds($1,000) to win and $325 up for grabs in Sport Compacts. The Go-Karts will also cap off their season in a final showdown.

“W” is for “W”hiteaker

The Limited Modified main fired off with Steven Whiteaker getting a good jump, leading Ray Doyon, Edward Oakes, Tryton Temple and Daniel Preston on lap 1. Whiteaker quickly began easing away while Jared Maupin and Trent Beaver got by Preston for fifth and sixth respectively. By lap 7 the leaders were up on traffic.

Maupin was able to get fourth from Temple as they approached halfway. Whiteaker had built a full straightaway advantage at the crossed flags over Doyon, E. Oakes, Maupin and Temple. A debris caution on lap 11 slowed the pace and rebunched the field. Back under green, Maupin, E. Oakes and Beaver were three wide for third, with E. Oakes getting shuffled back.

As Whiteaker again grew his lead, Maupin and Beaver were wheel to wheel for third. Lap 16 saw another caution for parts on the track after James Parks had contact and lost the nose piece. Once back to green, Whiteaker got away while Doyon and Maupin stayed side by side for second.617d58aa63065__JRP9354(1024x683)(2).jpg.ef8e09c4761f6dc458aba98c0c14c493.jpg

In the closing laps, Craig Oakes made his way to the top five, from his sixth row starting spot, passing Temple, then Beaver for fourth. Up front it was Whiteaker(Robstown), in the Johnny Torres owned, Scott Ball Racing, Tator Plumbing, Sundowner Diesel Performance, Allens 24/7 Towing, F-Bomb Diesel, Mission Auto Parts, IRP Chassis grabbing his first of two wins for the night.

**With his twelveth place finish Sterling Tausch was able to secure the 2021 Limited Modified track title.

Whiteaker Whips 'Em

The initial start of the 15-lap Late Model feature saw Steven Whiteaker quickly jump out front chased by Brandon Brzozowski, Austin Theiss, Kody Hardage and Landon Sowder, but Ryan McDonald would go around for a complete restart. The second was almost a carbon copy, but McDonald didn't spin.

As Brzozowski and Theiss ran side by side for second, Whiteaker was checking out until McDonald spun on lap 6. On the restart, Theiss got past Brzozowski in turn turn 1, with Hardage joining the party going three wide in turn 3. Brzozowski would hold on to second, but Whiteaker had already built a big margin.

As Whiteaker continued to pull away, banging the chip, McDonald briefly got past Sowder until he kissed the front stretch wall giving the spot back up. Whiteaker(Robstown) in the 1st Class Towing, D&SS Construction, G&M Oilfield Services, Maxima, WW Bodies, MB Customs by CDR would go uncontested for the victory.617d58cd2017a__JRP9487(1024x683)(2).jpg.6e004e956fe8cf860163544f31ba3225.jpg

Hustlin' Hessong Hits It Right

Twenty-two Factory Stocks took the green for the 20-lap feature that saw Nathan Rachui and Josh Sewell stay side by side until Rachui inched out front to lead lap 1. Sewell, John Aramendia, Mickey Helms and Dakota Hurley fell in behind. GW Hessong and Da. Hurley swapped the fifth spot while Sewell took a peek low on Rachui for the lead.

Once clear of Da. Hurley, Hessong took fourth from Helms and a lap later third from Aramendia. Treyler Caulfield looped it to bring out a yellow that saw Hessong get by Sewell for second on the restart and Helms take fourth from Aramendia. At the crossed flags it was Rachui, Hessong, Sewell, Helms and Aramendia. Points leader Da. Hurley would spin and collect his brother, Dustin. Both would be able to continue with some damage.

Hessong used the high side on the restart to go around Rachui to take the point on lap 11 with Allen Alexander getting fifth from John Lieta. After a multi-car tangle on lap 12, Helms and Aramendia swapped some paint fighting for fourth with Aramendia falling back numerous spots. Donald Cain, who started in row 11, was on a charge taking fourth from Helms leaving him door to door with Alexander.

Hessong crept ahead while Alexander moved up to third and was challenging Rachui for second. On the final lap, Cain made one last run getting by both Alexander and Rachui for second. But out front it was Hessong(Edna) in the Magnum Services, Tonys Mobile Home Service, Edna Auto Supply, Rock Motors, Lieta Farms, Lick My Stack Cooking Team, Destroyer Chassis, taking the checkers.

**Despite spinning and taking some damage after collecting his brother in a mid-race crash. Dakota Hurley was able to finish high enough to hold off Dillon Gaither for the 2021 Factory Stock championship.

Lopez began to inch away from the field while Ralston and Alexander battled for third. At halfway the top five still showed Lopez, Schoenfeldt, Alexander, Ralston and Miller with Jett Johnson and Robert Keylich door to door for sixth.

The last half of the race saw Lopez continue to increase his margin. Behind him, Ralston was on the move getting past Alexander and Schoenfeldt in the final laps for second. No Leisurely Pace for Leasure

It was three wide for lead off of turn 2 in the Sport Compact feature between Brandon McCall, Michael Burris and Sean Leasure. McCall got the early advantage followed by Burris, Leasure, Ryan McDonald and Dylan Kowalik. Burris and Leasure went by McCall who made contact with Jamie Garner as he headed towards the infield, losing several laps in the hot pit.

This left Leasure out front with McDonald getting second from Burris. At the midway point it was Leasure, McDonald, Burris, Justin Sitterle and John Thomas in the top five. Kowalik had trouble and stopped in turn 4 for a lap 10 yellow. The green didnt stay back on long as Jennifer Kidd went around in turn 4 after contact.

Once back to green, Garner made his way back up getting fourth from Sitterle. Burris got along side McDonald for second with Garner and Sitterle door to door for fourth. Leasure(Mansfield) inched away building about an eight-car edge coming to the white flag and going on to the victory in his Rabid Motorsports, TBG, BC Customs, L&D Transportation, Chevy Cavalier.

**The second place finish and McCall and Garner's issues, McDonald maintained his points lead to wrap up the 2021 Sport Compact title.
