  2. I understand that Clayton Green will be driving the #04 Roper Racing Team truck at North Wilkesboro Speedway tomorrow (May 18).

BTW, Steve's wife, Dana, would help out behind the scenes for whatever Texas series Steve was running at the time. Very personable and competent lady.

There was 1 car, that was driven by a guy that I hadn't seen/heard of before. I might not have even noticed, until the announcer said his hometown. It was Clayton Green of Marble Falls, TX. It looked like he would have started in the top 15 before the rains came. They announced that he would start 27th. Maybe someone on this site can add some more about Mr Green's racing history.

Clayton is Steve Green's son.  Steve raced for several years in Central/South Texas a decade or two ago. Ten years ago I wrote about Clayton's debut in an HMP press release.

"Last time out (July 5) race fans witnessed the long-awaited debut of a “new style” NASCAR American Muscle Car (AMCAR) in the newly-created NASCAR division at HMP. Clayton Green, in a sharp-looking new Camaro built by his father and veteran-driver Steve Green, finished third in the feature behind points-leader David Webster and Nathan Demski. Green was battling Demski for second at one point and the car looked fast down the straights.

“'That was our first time out with the car and we need to work on the setup a little more,” the 17 year-old Green said. “I know it’s going to be plenty fast once we get it dialed in and we’re looking to win with it this week.”'
  4. North Texas Nationals awaits USMTS road warriors

The Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt will return to action on Friday and Saturday, May 17-18, at the RPM Speedway in Crandall, Texas, with another doubleheader in the ARMI Contractors USMTS South Region presented by Gene Nicholas, LLC.

The third installment of the USMTS North Texas Nationals awaits as the tricky bullring hosts the series for the first time in three seasons.

The USMTS has staged eight trips at the semi-banked 1/4-mile dirt oval. Most recently, Dereck Ramirez topped the 11th Annual Texas Spring Nationals here in 2021,  with Terry Philips winning the first of two nights of racing.

The debut event in 2012 was rained out but the series returned in 2013 with Rodney Sanders getting the win. Johnny Scott also won in 2013 and Ramirez returned to conquer the USMTS North Texas Nationals presented by Penske Racing Shocks in 2020.

In November 2020, the track hosted the USMTS along with several USRA divisions at the 3rd Annual Summit Southern Nationals. Jack Sartain got his first win on opening night while the final two nights went to dirt late model standout Brandon Sheppard.

This year’s show will pay $5,000 to win the Summit USMTS main event each night.

Both days this weekend will also feature Limited Mods and Factory Stocks with grandstands opening at 6 p.m., drivers meeting at 6:45, hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30. The pits open at 5 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Grandstand admission is $25 each night for spectators age 16 and older while seniors, military and kids (6-15) are just $15. Pit passes are $45 each night and children ages 5 and under get in for free all weekend.

  6. USMTS racers ready for return to RPM Speedway

Most recently, Dereck Ramirez topped the 11th Annual Texas Spring Nationals here in 2021, along with Terry Philips winning the first of two nights of racing.

Both days will also feature Limited Mods and Factory Stocks with grandstands opening at 6 p.m., drivers meeting at 6:45, hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30. The pits open at 5 p.m. Friday and 12 noon on Saturday.

Then this guy from Beaverton, MI showed up for a high paying 100 lapper.

Way, way back when it was only a grey area in the rules, I bought a tricked-up center link from Howe that had vertical mounting bolts rather than the stock, horizontal bolts. It looked all the world like a stock Chevy center link.

When I say "way, way back," not many stock car racers knew about bump-steer (roll-steer) at the time, but with the Howe center link, adjusting bump steer became a simple matter of adding or subtracting shims to get whatever bump steer your little heart desired.

Not giving away secrets, but when I showed that Howe center link as it was mounted in the car to a well-known tech official (at the time), and asked specifically if the center link was legal. "Yep, it's a stock center link," was the verdict.

Ed Howe was a very smart Late Model racer and car builder.
