  1. Hey HiTech my dad took me and two of my brothers to the dragrace you mentioned that had the army sponsored wheel stander tank "Hell on Wheels". They built it up for a week are longer prior to the race on radio making it sound like the tank was coming to Corpus to whoop up on the local driven Paddy Wagon, well there sure as heck was a a** whooping handed out as the Paddy Wagon won all three of their match races. In the early 70's this area had some of the best wheel standers in the country Paddy Wagon, Rare Bear, Fugititve, Daffy Duck I think I'm forgetting a couple. Besides those two wheel standers racing that day there were jet cars, dragsters and I think some funny cars also I can only remember a couple of them by name the USA-1 & Maxi Taxi were here and  pretty sure the Traveling Texan and Green Mamba both raced that day, dad took pictures we had put on slides I will try and hunt them up.

  2. That suprises me that he was driving a team car with Johnny, I have no idea if are how Johnny did racing at Meyer but at C.C. he won some races but not on a regular basis and to the best of my knowledge never was a track champion. The few times I saw Tom race at C.C. he had a car that could win, he led all but a couple laps in a 100 lapper I think his car broke with 1 are 2 to go and Monty won the race, which for me was a bum deal (not a Monty fan at all). The car I remember Tom in was maybe red, blue & white #9 and no idea what make of car.

  3. Always enjoy looking at pictures of old race cars and the 70's - 80's are my favorites. I never got to see a race at Meyer Speedway (I was only 14 in 1978) but when my home track (C.C. Speedway) had a big $ race there was always a few cars from the Houston area that would show up, Tom Riley is one that I remember best . I think he raced at Meyer but I don't know that for a fact, but I do know that when he showed up in Corpus he run up front.

  4. Racing again at C.C. Speedway no matter how small a chance and I realize it's not likely, still is music to my ears better yet it's the rumble of a small block chevy hitting the 8,000 rpm rev limiter. I hate that part of the grandstand is gone but maybe just maybe someone out there with funding could bring the old girl to life again.

  5. There is no doubt Frank did a hell of a job keeping us entertained........ if my memory serves me right there were several stunt men over the years only one that comes to me now was the the car trying to crash thru big block of ice???Don't think it worked out the way he wanted

  6. James Mikulencak won 3--4 from mid 70's to early 80's in Super Stock and I'm pretty sure Dennis McClain won two super stock champ.  in the 80's. Monty got a couple  late 70's to early 80's, Dub Rollins several thru the 60's into early 70's and  I'm guessin  Rick Rapp and Slick Yeomen may have each had  a couple from 75-83

  7. One of these weekends I'll go through the thousands of pics I have from CC Speedway from the 80s and 90s, locals and touring series and most I took as a kid/early teen. Growing up a block away from the Carluccis I have had the racing blood injected since birth. Kaminsky lived in the neighborhood at one time and some others. GB I have a picture of one of the Outlaw Minis I assume is an Evans since it was black and yellow 46 and I have one of a red and orange car forget the number but I thought they were dirt late models or what the super stocks look like now. Anyways we have several pics of Monte Nichols, Slick, Rick, Bruce Sanders, and John Kelly b/c back then the coolest thing in the world was going to their cars after the races and getting to sit in one. Don't see that too much anymore, that and candy giveaways or characters like Elmer Jean throwing bubble gum.

Anybody have a picture of the car Rick Rapp drove with mickey Mouse on the roof.

  8. Thats not why he crashed! He went into a turn after takeoff and did not have enough air speed ,so down it went! A local firefighter named Butch Malek was also killed! Sonny was a promoter, you know what i mean? But he would help you anytime you were short ! same as Frank Hoch. Sonny would listen to the racers, even if he did not like what you had to say! He always said racers were a bunch of prima donnas,he was right on. He paid well! When i raced for him I did not agree with the prima donna thing! But 23 years later he had a point! Its what can you do me these days ,it should be what can I do for racing! I miss him.

I went to school with sonny's boy william brown. Sonny was a great guy he took me to my first T.R.O.C. in 1980 we took an old motorhome he had and stayed in the infield, back then they had wet t-shirt and beer chuggin contest at night and william and i had a blast watchin those guys and girls. I was 14 lol
