Austinite Hellmund Seventh in NASCAR Winston West

"Bosch Spark Plug 150" in Phoenix

Phoenix, Arizona -- Racing for the first time on a track he's never seen before, Austin's C. T. (Tavo) Hellmund drove his Suzuki Motorcycles and ATVs/Pontiac Grand Prix into the top ten within the first 20 laps of the 150-lap NASCAR Winston West "Bosch Spark Plug 150" at Phoenix International Raceway and finished seventh. Winston Cup veteran Ken Schrader won, with Scott Lynch second in Brendan Gaughan's Winston Cup car. Hellmund lost two spots with only 20 laps to go when Brett Thompson spun in front of him and allowed Austin Cameron and Steve Portenga to get by Hellmund's Suzuki/Grand Prix.

"We brought six gears to Phoenix and all of them were too tall," Hellmund laughed after the race. "I was on the rev limiter halfway down the back straight during the race. We tried to borrow a taller gear, but obviously that's the gear everyone else was using."

Hellmund also lost five spots in the pits when the fuel hose malfunctioned. To save time lost due to the fuel problem the Suzuki crew elected to change only the outside tires while everyone else was changing all four. Still, Hellmund and the crew were satisfied with the finish.

"Two months ago, we had a 1999 car we had last run at Las Vegas in 2002." Hellmund said. "NASCAR was sending rules changes out to the teams constantly as they worked to get the Winston West and Busch North series cars combined into the new Grand National Division, and we couldn't test at Phoenix. But we got the car here, qualified in the top 15, raced all day in the top six or seven and finished seventh. We're seventh in championship points and with two months until the next race, we'll take that and move forward."
