Doubleheader Weekend @ I-37 Speedway, 6/25-26/21

By JM Hallas

Pleasanton, TX.,(June 26th, 2021) Summer Swing Begins

After a brief hiatus, I-37 Speedway was back in action on the ¼ mile, semi-banked, dirt oval just outside Pleasanton. Friday night was a rescheduled make-up race that included the Nogalitos Gear Late Models. Saturdays show had the POWERi Mini Sprints in action with the Winged Restrictors and 600 Non-Wing Mini Sprints.

All five of the regulars classes(IMCA Modifieds, Limited Modifieds, Factory Stocks, “B” Factory Stocks and Sport Compacts) would race both nights with Saturday being a $700 to win race for the All in Design Factory Stocks.

Despite the near 100* temperatures and a good breeze the track kept a lot of moisture providing some good racing throughout the night and no dust.

Dinsmore Dialed In for Win

As the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature took the green it was Greg Dinsmore beating his son, Logan, to turn 1 for the lead. L. Dinsmore slotted in line second with Rick Green, Marcus Mikulencak and Talon Minten in tow. Mikulencak wasted little time getting past Green for third bringing Minten along the next lap to fourth.

As G. Dinsmore crept out to a lead, Green got fourth back from Minten in traffic. At the crossed flags it was father and son, the Dinsmores, still up front with Mikulencak third, Green fourth and Minten fifth. Mikulencaks run came to an an end in the front stretch wall while trying to negotiate traffic for a lap 12 caution

On the restart Jared Maupin took fourth from Minten, who got loose a lap later giving up spots to Ryan Doyon and Doug Cameron before exiting to the pits. Green and Maupin were able to pass L. Dinsmore for second and third and attempt to run down G. Dinsmore in the waning laps. Maupin was able to sneak past Green for second.

As the white flag waved G. Dinsmore had eight car lengths on Maupin, but in turns3-4 came up on a slower car that got loose. G. Dinsmore had to check up giving Maupin a run, but at the line it was, former I-37 Speedway track champion, G. Dinsmore(Kerrville) in the Sundowner Diesel Performance, Jimmys Towing, Stealth, Wehrs, Afco, Friesen crate powered BMS Chassis taking the checkers.

Hoefling Hustles in Limited Modified Madness

The Limited Modified feature gets the “honor”(sarcasm) of most torn up sheet metal, and it started early. On the initial start Daniel Preston got the lead in turn 1 but Garrett Godfredson, JJ Jennings and Edward Oakes tangled in turns 3-4 bringing out a yellow and a complete restart.

Again Preston got the lead, coming off turn 2 trailed by Ryan Doyon, Ray Doyon, Jared Maupin and Sterling Tausch. Brian Rye brought out a lap 2 caution after bouncing off the front stretch wall. On the restart Godfredson was next find the front stretch wall collecting Rye in about the same spot.

The ensuing restart saw Ra. Doyon get past Ry. Doyon but slap the wall and do a couple tank slappers pinballing his way into turn 2. Up front Ry. Doyon caught Preston for the lead and got alongside on lap 5 after Preston slipped in turn 2. As the two fought for the spot, Maupin closed in on both while Shane Hoefling got by Tausch for fourth.

At halfway Preston was still holding off Ry. Doyon, Maupin, Hoefing and E. Oakes. Nathan Oakes would loop it out of turn 2 for a lap 11 yellow rebunching the field. Once back to green Maupin took second from Ry. Doyon briefly. Ry Doyon fought back for the spot as the two ran wheel to wheel. That battle came to a head when Ry. Doyon clipped Maupin sending him around in turn 3 and sending Craig Oakes over the turn 3 hill.

Back to green, C. Oakes got by E. Oakes for third as Hoefling began stalking Preston for the lead. Hoefling, using the bottom, got inside Preston on the back stretch. Going into turn 3 Preston tried to hold Hoefling down with the two making a little contact. A lap later Hoefling again drove under Preston off turn 2 and as Preston tried to hold him down in turn 3, Preston spun with C. Oakes taking another trip over hill to avoid contact.

The lap 15 restart saw Hoefling, now on point get away, leaving another father-son battle for second between the Oakes. E. Oakes was able to get the spot, but Hoefling(Meyersville) in the API, Lost Lagoon RV Park, Crawfish Catering, Schendel Farms, Dark Horse Shocks, Cuero Engine Service, IRP Chassis had checked out taking the victory and sweeping the weekend after his Friday night win.

Lopez Lands in Victory Lane

It was an exciting start to the 20-lap Factory Stock feature with Dillon Gaither, Jose Lopez and Johnny Johnson three wide off turn 2 for the lead. Gaither finally secured the spot with Lopez, Johnson, Dustin Hurley and Josh Sewell sorting out in the top five. Jarrett Payton got fifth from Sewell and after short door to door battle.

Du. Hurley was able to grab third from Johnson as Sewell retook fifth with some trying four wide in mid-pack. Lopez was able to get by Gaither for the lead before Cameron Dinsmore aerated his motor on lap 8 bringing out the caution for parts and fluid in turn 2. On the restart George Quintanilla made contact in the pack sending him over the turn 3 hill.

Back under green, Du Hirley took second from Gaither while Johnson and Dakota Hurley were side by side for fifth. At the midway point it was Lopez, Du. Hurley, Gaither, Sewell and Da. Hurley in the top five. Gaither and Sewell had the Alexander team cars door to door for third while Du. Hurley tried to sniff the lead on Lopez in in turns 1-2.

As the final laps clicked off Lopez responded to Du. Hurleys pressure, and was able to creep away to a few car lengths over Du. Hurley while Gaither and Sewell continued their scrap for team bragging rights. As the white flag was shown it was Lopez(Victoria) with five car lengths advantage grabbing his first ever I-37 checkers.

Lopez and Gordon quickly began to ease away from the field. Wilcox and Keylich made contact in turn 3 with Wilcox and Clark getting by.

Keylich would then half spin and collect Jett Johnson as they rolled into the infield to avoid a yellow. J. Johnson refired and continued. Gordon began to give Lopez a little pressure for the lead but Lopez((Somerset), in the Jamie Fuller owned car, responded and pulled back to eight car lengths edge as they came to the checkers

McDonald Still Master of Sport Compacts

As the 17-car, 20-lap Sport Compact feature took the green it was Michael Burris jr. getting out front chased by Joshua Garcia, Ryan McDonald, Jamie Garner and Ryker Hernandez. McDonald quickly got by Garcia for second with Garner following to third. Just as McDonald caught Burris for the lead, Chad Miller spun for a yellow.

On the second restart, McDonald tried to dive low under Burris but couldn't find any bite. Burris, McDonald and Garner were almost three wide for the lead on lap 7 with McDonald finally getting by on lap 8. After a quick debris caution, Garner and Burris were door to door for second while the two Hernandez brothers, Ryker and Levi, went side by side for fourth.

As the last half clicked off the laps McDonald inched away from Burris and Garner while Levi and Ryker Hernandez showed each other no brotherly love trading a little paint. Burris slowed with two to go while McDonald(Floresville) in the PRG Realty, Texas Task Force, 181 Paving, Buggy Warehouse, 2004 Chevy Cavalier grabbed another win, his second of the weekend.

Moeller made the move on lap 3 to get past Brown for the lead with Garcia following along to second. Moeller and Garcia then put on a slide job clinic for the lead that had the crowd going crazy. That battle was broken up only a lap 13 yellow for Russell stopped on the back stretch.
