debwill Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 For Immediate Release Contact: Debbie Williams, (210) 685-0400 Terry Barden, (210) 827-4524 SPRING FLING ROLLS OVER INTO MAY MADNESS San Antonio, TX (May 6, 2005) - The USRA Track Management Group at San Antonio Speedway is excited to announce the start of "May Madness" for the NASCAR Late Model class this Saturday night, May 7, beginning at 7:15 p.m. One of the significant benefits of last weekend's Spring Fling 75 race was an increased payout for the NASCAR Late Model drivers. As a result of the bigger purse, more drivers than usual turned out to join in the special event. Nineteen NASCAR Late Models put on a great show for the fans, and they are all invited back this week. To help continue their interest, San Antonio Speedway is offering $1,000 to the winner of the NASCAR Late Model race this Saturday night. In addition, the minimum payout will be $125 for any driver who takes the green flag in the Late Model feature race. Not only will the payouts be increased for this week, but they will also continue throughout the month of May, creating a "May Madness" in the NASCAR Late Model class. "We want everyone to come back and race with us again," stated Terry Barden, General Manager of SAS. "And even if you weren't here last week, we hope you'll consider joining this growing Late Model class," appealed Barden. "We want to continue the momentum while making it a bit easier on our drivers by increasing the purse." The response by the fans to the additional car count last week was also overwhelming, and SAS hopes the enthusiasm from the May Madness will carry over to the fans. "We want our fans to continue having fun at San Antonio Speedway while enjoying some of the best racing in South Texas," said Terry Dickerson, president of USRA. Although growth in the NASCAR Late Model class is the current focus at SAS, the other classes will also be getting some extra attention in the upcoming months. Plans are currently underway to make those classes more attractive to potential racers and hopefully draw additional cars in all of the SAS divisions, which are also NASCAR-sanctioned. Grandstand gates will open at 5:00 p.m., opening ceremonies begin at 7:15 p.m., and the first green flag will wave promptly at 7:30 p.m. San Antonio Speedway is a half-mile NASCAR-sanctioned oval asphalt track that is located at 14901 State Highway 16 South (Poteet Highway), about 3.5 miles south (outside) of Loop 410. The speedway can be accessed easily by taking IH 35 South and exiting on Highway 16 South (left exit), just past South Park Mall. The race hotline number is (210) 628-1867, and the speedway's website can be found at http://www.sanantoniospeedway.com.
