rebelracewriter
IHRA: Good Vibrations take over San Antonio Raceway Tuesday, 22 March 2016 Steve Cole Smith You once knew it as the Nitro Jam, but now it's the IHRA Good Vibrations Texas Nationals Fueled by Sunoco, and it's scheduled for April 1-3 at San Antonio Raceway, located near downtown San Antonio in Marion. The 2016 IHRA Drag Racing Series, formerly Nitro Jam, is a departure of the traditional format with all events featuring the same classes of competition. The IHRA strategically determined professional classes that are best suited for each facility and market. The season began March 5 and 6 at Orlando Speed World Dragway in Florida with the Spring Nitro Nationals, and continues with the Good Vibrations Nationals as the second event. From there, the IHRA Drag Racing Series moves to Maryland International Raceway, Grand Bend Motorplex in Ontario, Canada; Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; U.S. 31 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan, with the season closing out at Dragway 42 in West Salem, Ohio on September 23 and 24. The Texas event has been a super-successful staple for years at the San Antonio Raceway, inarguably one of the nicest quarter-mile tracks in the south. Bleacher capacity is over 10,000, served by three concession areas. There are private suites available, and there's even an on-site fueling station. But racing in general, and the event in particular, was in jeopardy in 2015, when racing was put on hiatus for six months during an ownership change. According to the San Antonio Express News, the track reopened in May of last year with its new owner, Iain Grae, owner of Cycle Ranch Motocross Park & Events Center in nearby Floresville. With the help of a few business owners, sponsors, fans and several drag racers, a GoFundMe.com crowdfunding campaign recently raised more than $33,000 in under a month. And the track is thriving, with a big crowd expected for the IHRA Good Vibrations Texas Nationals. On Friday, April 1, there's Sportsman qualifying beginning at noon, as well as two qualifying sessions for Pro Stock, Nitro Motorcycle, Pro Mod, Nitro Funny Car and Jet Cars. Saturday, the day starts with Sportsman eliminations at 9 a.m., followed by the third round of Pro qualifying, followed by round 1 and round 2 of Pro Eliminations. Between Pro rounds, Sportsman eliminations will continue. Pro Finals held be held under the lights at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, it's all Sportsman competition, with qualifying starting at 9 a.m., followed by Eliminations.
