Race #8 Recap @ Cotton Bowl Speedway

Recommended Posts

This past weekend was the South Texas Street Stock Shootout's second two night show of the season as they were a part of the Cotton Bowl Speedway 4th Annual Showdown to cap off their 2015 season in Paige, Texas. What a show it was all weekend long.

Friday night's qualifiers and re-draw put the 22P of Mickey Helms on the pole and he quickly took the drop back bonus for Saturday night's main event. Wade Jones, Heath Stewart, and Anthony Gordon took their nightly drop back as well to earn some passing points.

The track had started taking rubber after the IMCA Modified the feature before STXSSS took the green. With Helms to the back, multi-time Street Stock champion at a few tracks, Tony Blankenship led the field to the line. CBS regular Jeff Schultea ran strong all weekend and challenged Blankenship early as the winner of the previous two events, Craig Oakes followed closely with Tim Sikorski and Kyle Carter the early top 5.

It took Oakes 11 laps to get out front and Blankenship would fade back before retiring with a flat left front. Oakes survived a challenge from Schultea but Shane Hoefling and Tommy Gural had fought their way into the top 5 by the midway point.

The fine drivers in STXSSS made 22 green flag laps before the stalled car of Gerald Johnson brought out the first caution and wouldn't you know it, Wade Jones was now 2nd on Oakes bumper to restart. Stewart and Gordon had climbed into the top five late in the race too but Gordon would bring out the next caution as he spun to avoid contact with another car. Back under green, Jones spent two laps setting up Oakes and had a run through 3-4 and came up a fender short as he and Oakes drag raced to the checkers. The crowd was treated and on their feet for the second straight race that night after the IMCA Modified did the same thing. Schultea, Brian Rye, and Hoefling rounded out the top 5.

Jones' second place finish will put him in a good position to claim his fifth STXSSS Championship and Oakes finished off the hat trick to make it three main event wins in a row. Jones will look to clinch the points championship and Oakes to go for a fourth straight win and a $2000 payday November 4-6 at South Texas Speedway as the series finale heads to the Getcha$ome, South Texas Promotions event.
