Second Try for Browynn Birdsong Childhood Cancer Awareness Opening Night at Salina Speedway

by Dusty Wiegert

SALINA, Kan. Last week the engines roared to life as cars took to the Salina Speedways 3/8 mile oval for the first time in 2015. It was short lived, however, as severe storms closed in and forced the cancellation of the nights events before they got started.

Race teams and fans are now on the edge of their seats, anticipating tomorrow nights (May 1st) second take on Opening Night. All that was completed in last weeks show was hot laps, so this weeks racing will start from scratch, with seven divisions competing in qualifying heat races and features. Those divisions are the BSB Manufacturing NeSmith Late Models, 1st Class Chassis IMCA Modifieds, Coors Light IMCA Stock Cars, Xtreme Motorsports IMCA Northern SportMods, Auto House Mod Lites, Budweiser IMCA Hobby Stocks, and M&H Motors IMCA Sport Compacts.

An added bonus for tomorrow nights program includes a special heat race winner payout. Don Damon and Xtreme Motor Sports will be giving $50 to all heat race winners in every division! Heat races will be lined up by draw with features re-drawn for lineups.

The event will once again be a fund raiser for Browynn Birdsongs family. The Speedway will donate $2.00 for every ticket sold to the family along with a 50/50 and other various fund raising activities. Browynn passed away in February after a short battle with ETANTR brain cancer, a very rare cancer with 0% survival rate. He was only two years old.

Fans and race teams in attendance last week are asked to please hold on to their ticket stubs or pit passes for admittance this week. They will be honored as rain checks this week only and you must have it in hand when arriving at the ticket booth or pit shack.

Admission is $10 for adults, while kids 15 & under are FREE with paid adult admission. Seniors 55 & up are half price (with ID) and Military, both active and retired, are FREE also! Pit passes are $25.

Pit gates open at 5:00PM, Grandstands at 5:30PM, and Hot Laps at 7:15PM with racing to follow.
