Sanders storms from 16th to top night 2 of USMTS Winter Nationals

 

VIVIAN, La.-Rodney Sanders added another USMTS feature win to bring his season total to 27 and added the Ark-La-Tex Speedway to his list of conquered venues Friday night after winning the 40-lap main event on the second night of the 8th Annual USMTS Winter Nationals.

 

Had the race at Gene Boyter's high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval been five laps shorter, polesitter Chris Brown would have netted the $3,000 top prize but Sanders pounced on lap 36 and then held Brown at bay the rest of the distance.

 

Sanders started 16th on the grid and was up to seventh at the halfway point of the race while Brown battled feverishly with Chris Henigan and Kelly Shryock at the front of the pack.

 

Still sitting sixth with 11 laps to go, Sanders discovered a new line through the middle of the track and began to narrow the gap between himself and the leaders.

 

After using the high side to make his way to the front, Sanders used the bottom to make his move around Brown.

 

The pair fought hard the final five laps but it was Sanders picking up his 45th career USMTS victory while Brown had to settle for second place.

 

Shryock continued his late-season charge with a third-place finish while Henigan held on for fourth.

 

Steve Whiteaker Jr. rounded out the top five while Triston Dycus, Stormy Scott, Terry Phillips, Johnny Scott and Jason Hughes completed the top 10.

 

Action continues Saturday for the final USMTS race of the 2014 campaign with $4,000 going to the winner of the 50-lap main event. Factory Stocks and Limited Mods will also be competing with $1,000 to win up for grabs in both classes.

 

Spectator tickets are $20 and pit passes are $40. Kids ages 10 and under get in for free. Race time is 5:30 p.m.
