Tyler Thomas heads for New Smyrna Late Models in quest for 2nd victory

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 28, 2014)Tyler Thomas will drive in his seventh and final Late Model Pro race of the season Saturday at New Smyrna Speedway. The 18-year-old pavement and stock car rookie from Collinsville, Okla., wants to augment his impressive performances with a second victory.

I want another win, Thomas said. Everything is working great and its important to end the year off well with these guys (Tim Russells team) and not tear up the car so they can get it prepared for (New Smyrna) Speedweeks next year. Basically, all weve been doing has been test and tune for Speedweeks.

Thomas won in his second Late Model Pro start on June 21. Hes finished second three times, was third in his debut on May 17 and fourth on Oct. 11. Hes also raced in the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series, where he had one victory and finished sixth in the championship despite missing events that conflicted with the Late Model events, and in the Honda USAC National Midget Series. Thomas will close out the year on dirt in the USAC National Midgets in Arizona and California and will also likely race in the American Sprint Car Series.

Saturdays race is a 50-lapper. It will be the fourth 50-lapper for Thomas on the famed half-mile. He has two runners-up and the third place in the previous three.

I prefer the 50-lappers, he said. You learn more about how to race and you qualify rather than start by draw.
