Tyler Thomas heads to Tri-City Speedway for USAC Gold Crown Midget Nationals

GRANITE CITY, Ill. (Oct. 1, 2014)Tyler Thomas of Collinsville, Okla., will race in three events in three nights starting Thursday at Tri-City Speedway in the 6th annual Gold Crown Nationals with the goal of boosting his top-five season totals in the Honda USAC National Midget Series.

The 18-year-old Thomas has raced primarily in the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series and has raced in six events co-sanctioned by USAC. Thomas finished third in the POWRi/USAC feature at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wis., on Aug. 17 and fifth at the Kokomo (Ind.) Grand Prix on April 12.

Im excited to be racing in the Gold Crown Nationals, Thomas said. It will bring together nearly all of the top Midget drivers in the nation. It will be a similar group to the Kokomo and Angell Park events co-sanctioned with POWRi, whose Midgets arent racing this weekend.

The Gold Crown has 25-lap features on Thursday and Friday and runs 40 laps on the three-eighths mile track Saturday. The finale will earn the winner $10,000.

The $10,000 would be nice to have, Thomas said, but Id take a win in any of the three.

Thomas finished third at Spoon River Speedway, also a three-eighths mile track, in Canton, Ill., on Sept. 13 in his most recent POWRi National Midget feature. He raced at Port City Raceway in Tulsa, Okla., on Sept. 27 in a POWRi Lucas Oil West event and fell out of the feature in an airborne crash.

Thomas has 11 top-fives in 20 POWRi National events, including the USAC co-sanctions, this season. He has one victory, raising his POWRi National career total to four.

This has been our best season yet in terms of competitive consistency, he said.

Thomas has also spent his first season racing stock cars and on pavement in the Late Model Pro Series at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway. He has one victory, two second places and a third in his rookie stock car campaign. Thomas has three Late Model Pro events to run at New Smyrna, Oct. 11, Oct. 18 and Nov. 1.
