IMCA Desert Classic This Weekend at CSP

by Lonnie Wheatley

PEORIA, Ariz. (September 16, 2014) The 1/3-mile Canyon Speedway Park clay oval is back in action for two full nights this weekend with the running of the 26th Annual IMCA Desert Classic on Friday and Saturday.

The IMCA Modifieds will take center stage, battling it out for $1,500 to win on both nights with the Pure Stocks, Renegades, Dwarf Cars and AMA Mod Lites in action as well. The green flag flies at 7:00 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.

After having his seven-race win streak snapped on the opening night of the recent Stock Car Shootout on August 30, Ricky Thornton, Jr., will try to get to work on another win streak after topping the IMCA Modified feature the next night.

In total, Thornton, Jr., has won 12 of 15 IMCA Modified features at CSP in 2014 with Cody Center interrupting the run of Thornton domination on August 30. Center is 46 points behind Thornton, Jr., in the track championship points race with Steve Stultz four more points back in third and Ryan Roath another two points behind in fourth. George Fronsman rounds out the current top five in track points.

Both Friday and Saturday features for the IMCA Modifieds offer up a $1,500 winners share with $150 to start with full points awarded for both nights.

Newton, Iowas Mike Van Genderen is the reigning Desert Classic champion, topping the finale after Mark Stewart took victory honors in preliminary night action.

Although denied victory lane thus far, Chris McCurdy, Jr., brings a one-point Pure Stock lead over four-time winner Matt Martinez into the weekend while David Harrington holds a slim three-point advantage over Joe Peterson in the Renegade ranks.

After Tony Martin and Mike Strobel split the opening four Dwarf Car feature events, Keaton Swane topped the most recent outing on July 12 while Thornton, Jr., and Chaz Baca, Jr., split most recent AMA Mod Lite honors on August 30-31.

Tickets to this weekends 26th Annual IMCA Desert Classic are just $15 on both Saturday and Sunday, with a $2 discount for Military, Seniors and Students. Children ages 7-12 are $6, with children 6 and under admitted free. VIP passes are available for $20 each night.
