Four Features Headline Bob Newton Classic

By Anita Soltis

(Plymouth, IN) The Sprints on Dirt Series drivers are coming to Plymouth Speedway for a second time this season for the Bob Newton Classic.

Which of the Winged Sprint drivers will attempt to put a stop to Randy Hannagan’s sweep at the Playground of Power? Shawn Dancer and Gregg Dalman showed a lot of speed at their last attempt at a podium finish in May so they may be the ones to watch this Saturday, Aug. 16. These cars pack a lot of horsepower so it will be a race to watch.

Also on Saturday, the Swan Lake Resorts UMP Modified division will welcome Andy Bozell to the field during this special night of racing to honor Bob Newton. Drivers in the Dickies Restaurant 600 Sprints and the Super Streets will also participate in this big night of racing.

Bob Newton was a racer before he was a businessman and he saw a need for better racing tires. Newton and his wife, Joyce, started Hoosier Tire in 1957. His legacy lives on at the company he built which has become the world's largest racing tire manufacturer and one of the largest employers in Marshall County.

If you think that’s all that’s happening this weekend, you’re mistaken.

The Warsaw Hall of Fame presentations are planned during the intermission of this weekend’s action and on Aug. 23. This Saturday, sprint car drivers and owners from the Warsaw Speedway will be recognized. They include John Davis, Sam Davis and Paul Hazen. Jim Elliott will be posthumously honored. On Aug. 23, stock car drivers Jerry Baker, Tom Beezley, Jim Bucher, Bruce Hogue, Art Leiter, Alan Marsh, Ron McKenzie, Dan Prater and John White will honored. Art Smith, Dick Leiter and Loralee Shermin will be posthumously honored.

The familiar speedway for many area fans closed in 1990.

All of the fun starts this Saturday. The gates open at 4 p.m. and racing begins at 7 p.m. ET.
