Carter Pulls Off Second Straight Win at Salina Speedway

by Larry Lowrey Jr.

SALINA, Kan. -- After a strong opening night 1 week ago, everyone was waiting to see if Salina Speedway could follow up on the magic from week #1.

Yes they could.

One driver in particular, Austin Carter, is enjoying the 2014 season. After Friday night at Salina Speedway Carter remains undefeated on the season in the M&H Motors IMCA Northern Sport Mod division as he won his 2nd straight feature.

It wasnt an easy win for Carter. He would start 10th on the grid and there were some tough competitors in the 20 car A Main.

Tyler Post looked to have the win all but locked up. Post started 8th in the feature, but by virtue of picking drivers off one at a time he found himself at the front of the field. For a large majority of the race he would sit at the front of the pack. The front is a good place to be especially if you can get to the checkered flag first. Post, unfortunately, had to deal with a late race yellow.

As the restart got under way it would be Carter, the week 1 winner, finding a way for the 2nd straight week to take over the lead and go on to the win. The late race heroics capped off an exciting feature.

Post would hold on for the runner-up spot, 3rd went to Jesse Levin, Matthew Crowell marched from 9th to finish 4th on the night and it was one of the biggest movers of the night, Kurtis Pihl, going from 14th to 5th.

Heat race winners in the M&H Motors IMCA Northern Sport Mods were Levin, Fred Traskowsky and Mark Franklin.

The BSB Manufacturing Late Model feature was another exciting feature on the night.

Chris Kratzer, The Rocketman, stormed out to the early lead and held off the hungry pack of wolves nipping at his heels.

Last weeks feature winner, Delbert Smith, gave Kratzer all the pressure he wanted at the front of the field. Smith, the reigning champ in the division, looked as if he might make it 2 for 2 but there was another challenger waiting to make a bid for the top spot.

Darrick Klima, a former feature winner in the division, worked on Smith before making a move to the lead with just 5 laps remaining. Klima worked his way by Smith for the point and never looked back for the remaining 5 laps. It would be Klimas first feature win of 2014.

Smith finished 2nd, 3rd would go to Kratzer and for the 2nd straight week Justin KinderKnecht and Jill Roberg rounded out the top 5 in 4th and 5th respectively.

BSB Manufacturing Late Model heat races were won by Scott Phillips and Alan Reinart.

A good old fashioned barn burner had the fans on their feet for the Budweiser IMCA Hobby Stock feature event.

For much of the main event it was a dog fight between Mike Traskowsky and Aaron McBride. The two aces would throw everything they had at the other to take the top spot. Both drivers would take turns at the top spot. As the two battled it out fans were wondering who it would be in the end.

The driver that would gain the final advantage late would be Traskowsky, as he worked his way by McBride and motored on to the win.

McBride drove to a hard fought runner-up spot, Tony Slothower finished with a respectable 3rd place finish, Tommy Fose was the big mover of the night going from 11th to 4th on the field and it was Kelly Pihl starting the feature in 5th and finishing the feature in 5th.

Budweiser IMCA Hobby Stock Heat Races were won by Mark Hedberg and Traskowsky.

If there was a dominating performance at Salina Speedway on Friday night it occurred in the Belleville Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature event.

Brian Knoell has many years of experience behind the wheel of a modified. Friday night he showed just how much that experience can be beneficial.

Knoell started on the pole position for the A Main and when the green flag dropped he took out into the top spot. Once at the front of the field he would use all of his knowledge and skill to make sure everyone stayed behind him in the feature. Knoell wired the field as he would lead every lap on the way to the victory.

Last years champ, Joe Cleveland, finished in the 2nd spot, a motor change couldnt keep another former champ down as Corey Largoon finished 3rd, 4th went to Mike Petersilie and the Hitman, Lyle Shepard, rounded out the top 5.

Belleville Motor Sports IMCA Modified heat race winners were Knoell and Cleveland.

The Coors Light Street Stock division might not have a ton of competitors every week but its one of the most competitive divisions at Salina Speedway.

Week #2 saw a new winner in victory lane, Geoff Jermark.

Jerry Phillips and Bob Arnold would battle from the drop of the green flag with Arnold getting the top spot at the end of lap #1.

Phillips would lay claim to the top position on the next lap and hang on to it for a few circuits.

Lap 6 would see the eventual winner, Jermark, take the lead and hang on from there.

Phillips would take 2nd, Arnold would come home in the 3rd position, 4th would go to Duane Toyne and Tyler Stucky rounded out the top 5.

The Coors Light Stock Car heat race win went to Phillips.

Friday night was the first appearance for the Chamucos Night Club Mini Stocks.

The feature had a lot of passing, which always is a delight to the crowd.

Russell Roberg started out as the early leader in the main event, but the eyes of the crowd had to be on Stacey Huffman.

Huffman started in the 8th position and lap after lap was knocking off competitors one at a time.

Roberg stayed in the top spot as the laps clicked off. Would there be enough time for Huffman to get to the front and could Roberg fend off Huffman in the last few laps?

It would come down to the last lap and it would be Huffman sneaking by Roberg to win the first Chamucos Night Club Mini Stock Feature.

Roberg was a close 2nd, Dallas Dun finished 3rd, 4th was Josh Howard and Tracy Montague came home with a top 5 in the 5th spot.

Chamucos Night Club Mini Stock heat race was won by Huffman.

Action at Salina Speedway will continue next Friday night, May 9th. Late Models, Modifieds, Sport Mods, Mod Lites and Hobby Stocks will all be on the docket for next weeks races.
