Salina Speedway Opens Up 2014 With a BANG

by Larry Lowrey Jr.

SALINA, Kan. -- The off season was long for the employees of Salina Speedway. Friday night all of their hard work promoting, working on the track and getting ready for the 2014 season paid off in a big way.

As for the races, it was a night of intense action that will set the tone for the entire race season. Drivers were racing 3 wide at times, racing in multiple lanes and drivers were moving up and passing cars through the field.

In the Budweiser IMCA Hobby Stocks it was Adam Armstrong celebrating in victory lane at the end of the night. Armstrong earned the victory at the Hobby Stocks appear to be one of the most competitive classes at Salina Speedway.

At the start of the feature it was Mike Traskowsky jumping out as the early leader. Armstrong, who started 5th on the grid, kept pace with Traskowksy by staying on his back bumper. As the two ran up front lapped traffic was going to be a factor.

On lap number 7 Armstrong saw his opportunity as they came into the lapped traffic. He would work his way around Traskowsky and hold on for the final 8 laps to take home his 1st win at Salina Speedway.

Traskowsky would hold on for the runner-up spot, 3rd went to a consistent Tony Slothower, Brendon Stigge would move from 7th to finish 4th and rounding out the top 5 was G.W. Fuller.

Heat race winners on the night in the Budweiser IMCA Hobby Stocks were Armstrong and Fuller.

A whopping 25 cars showed up to shoot it out in the M&H Motors IMCA Northern Sport Mod division. To complete the night of competition with this many cars would require a B Feature to be ran.
Some of the toughest racers in IMCA come from this division and its no surprise that there was a lot of passing in this A feature. Austin Carter, from Beloit, would hold off the competition and get the win.

Carter showed early in the night that he was going to be a factor in the nights proceedings as he went from worst to first in his heat race. It gave fans something to get up on their feet and cheer for but it also showed the competition that Carter was one fast racer.

Carter would get out front early in the Sport Mod main event, but behind him there was a lot of action. Daniel Gottschalk and Tyler Frye were dicing through the field as they both started 11th and 10th on the field respectively. Again the fans in the crowd enjoyed yet another solid race where passing was the norm and not the exception.

At the drop of the checkered flag both Gottschalk and Frye would run out of time as Carter would be strong enough to pick up the opening night win.

Gottschalk would hold on for 2nd, Frye would have to settle for 3rd, 4th went to Clay Money, who started 8th, and Nate Ginest, who started 12th, finished with a top 5 in the 5th position.

Heat race winners in the Budweiser IMCA Northern Sport Mod division were Carter, Money and Ginest. The B Feature win went to Kamren Gruber.

In the BMS IMCA Modifieds there were several heavy hitters in the field. Many tough competitors were ready to duke it out and nobody was more ready than Clay Sellard.

As the feature got ready to get underway Sellard knew that he would have to keep pace with a former multiple time feature winner, Corey Lagroon, who was starting in the pole position.

When the green flag flew the battle would begin and the jockeying for positions started all over the track. It was a battle that the fans loved to see and Sellard would come out with the top spot. The question is could he hang on?

Lagroon wasnt going to go away. Lagroon would give chase but in the end it would be Sellard notching the win.

One of the best battles was for the 3rd position as the Hitman Lyle Shepard was doing anything and everything to hold off a charging Danny Morrison by the races end.

The top 2 spots were locked up and the eyes went to the battle for 3rd. Shepard started 7th and Morrison 10th and they both worked their way up through the field. Shepard would come out on the top end of this battle as he would lock down the 3rd position and Morrison would settle for 4th after a tough battle. Shannon Johnson would finish in the 5th position with a solid performance.

Heat race winners in the BMS IMCA Modifieds were Sellard and David Murray.

One of the strongest races of the night occurred in the AutoHouse Towing Mod Lite division.

This feature event displayed a 3 car shootout at the front where BrandonGray, Danny Morrison and Justin Kinderknecht all swapped spots back and forth for a majority of the feature.

To the fans enjoyment 3 of the top 5 cars started in the 4th or 5th row at the beginning of the feature. That means one thing, PASSING!!!! The fans of Salina speedway got to see a lot of this in the Mod Lite Feature.

As the top 3 were slicing and dicing, it was Justin Kinderknecht, the reigning division champ, who would use lapped traffic to his advantage coming out of turn 4 to take the lead late in the race. Kinderknect wouldnt need any more help as he scooted on to the opening night win.

Morrison would come home in the 2nd spot, Gray would garner the 3rd spot, 4th went to Tyler Bradshaw and marching from 10th to 5th was Earl Kinderknecht.

AutoHouse Towing Mod Lite heat race wins went to Morrison and Bradshaw.

If you were watching the BSB Manufacturing Late Model feature you might have thought that Darrick Klima was going to start the season off with the win. You would have been wrong in thinking this.

The newly sanctioned NeSmith Crate Late Model Series saw Klima jump out to the early lead. Klima had a strong showing in 2013 and it looked like the beginning to his 2014 would be just as good. Unfortunately while leading the feature he came into contact with Chris Kratzer and the yellow flag came out. When the smoke cleared Klima and Kratzer were sent to the rear of the field for causing the yellow. This would open the door for Delbert The Iceman Smith.

This would be the only break that the 2013 Champ would need in route to beginning 2014 as he ended 2013, on top! Smith would run away with the opening night win.

Dustin Huehl enjoyed a solid night finishing in the 2nd spot, 3rd went to the double duty driver of Justin KinderKnecht, 4th went to Scott Phillips and rounding out the top 5 was Jill Roberg.

BSB Manufacturing Late Model heat race wins were awarded to Smith and Huehl.

Some drivers are on their A game when the feature starts and its evident to the fans just who those drivers are. In the Coors Light Street Stock Feature the fans realized that Scott Miller was a driver that was at his best Friday night.

Roaring from his 5th position on the starting grid. Miller roared to the front and never looked back on his way to the win.

Jerry Phillips would bring home a runner-up finish, last years champ, Duane Toyne, would come from 7th to finish 3rd, 4th would go to Bob Arnold and Fred Traskowsky rounded out the top 5.

Coors Light Street Stock heat race wins were taken by Miller and Geoff Jermark.

The great racing action will continue next Friday night, May 2, 2014. If this week is any indication of what next week will bring, GET THERE EARLY AND GET READY FOR SOME THE BEST RACING IN THE MIDWEST AND YOU WILL GET TO SEE IT FOR 1/2 PRICE!!!!!!
