Teen Tops in Lone Star Legacy Finale

With only 14 points separating the top two in ALS regional standings, it was old age and treachery versus youth and exuberance. Veteran Bill Boecker held that slim margin over 13 year old, Kyle Sirizzotti. In qualifying it was the youngster, Sirizzotti setting quick time with a 22.22 in his GT Sirizzotti Inc./Dodson House Moving/Thunderbird replica.

Sirizzotti would head the 8 car field flanked by Mel Kraus in the 25 lap feature to settle the championship, with Boecker starting fifth. Sirizzotti’s only hope was to win the race and hope Boecker suffered trouble and/or finished seventh or worse. The up-and-coming star would do what he needed to do as he grabbed the point on lap 2 from Krauss, who lead the first circuit.

Kraus and James Lee would battle for the second spot and swap the position giving Sirizzotti the chance to run out to a big lead by lap 5. On lap 8 Boecker and Kirby Honeycutt battled door to door for the fourth spot, with Honeycutt getting the spot on lap 9.

At halfway it was Sirizzotti holding a ½ straightaway lead over Krauss, Lee, Honeycutt and Boecker. Boecker lost another spot to John Riley on lap 18, and we looked to have close points finish shaping up. But Boecker would retake fifth on lap 19.

Krauss closed slightly in traffic, but never would get anywhere near enough to challenge. As the last laps wound down, Sirizzotti who was a Quarter Midget Champion, and National Championship race winner, kept his advantage and grabbed the win. Boecker would hold on to fifth and best the youngster by a handful of points for the Lone Star Legacy Regional title.

Sirizzotti, who started his racing career at age eight, looks to move up into the Texas Super Racing Series in the next couple years, when he becomes old enough. A challenger for the ALS Regional title at age 13, TSRS drivers need to be on the lookout for the next young gun when joins the series.
