NickHolt Posted May 10, 2013 Report Share Posted May 10, 2013 V8 Supercars ready to leave for Austin - Pair of 747s bringing the V8 Supercar Championship to town Two Boeing 747-400 freighter aircraft are due to leave Australia on Sunday and Monday to bring the Australian V8 Supercar Championship to the USA for the first time for the inaugural Austin 400 at Circuit of The Americas. The entire championship will bring more than 220,000 pounds of cars and equipment to Texas for next weekend's American round fo the championship which will feature four races over the three day event. The V8 Supercar teams faced a long journey back from the latest round of the series in Perth, Western Australia to their bases on Australia's East coast. The two aircraft will depart from Melbourne and Brisbane to head to Austin. Each aircraft will has the capacity for 16 cars in 8 double stack racks including the championship safety and course cars. The air freight system was developed six years ago by V8 Supercars to use for the international races in Asia, Middle East, New Zealand and this year to Austin, Texas. Gibson Freight handles all the equipment, as they do for Formula One and MotoGP. Along with cars and equipment, 400 members of the V8 Supercar "family" are making the trip to Texas including drivers, crew and series officials. Other fast facts include: - There are 784 dry running Dunlop tires coming to Austin along with 336 wet tires. - Each car will be limited to 24 wheels in addition to the four wheels that are mounted to the car at the event. This is a total of 784 (28 x 28) wheels. - Each V8 Supercar is worth more than $600,000 with engines costing $100,000 each. - Each 747-400 Series Freighter Aircraft will be carrying more than $50 million in racecars and $20 million worth of engine and associated equipment. -Total combined cost of the freight carried over by the two aircrafts and additional equipment carried in each team’s allocated container is more than $100 million.
