Why do they turn left?

For some strange reason the question of "Why do they turn left?" popped into my head. So I did a "Google" on it and found many many reasons why they turn left. Some make lots of sense while others are really strange. Why do you think they turn left?

Ive always thought it was because of the location of the driver. Silly, I guess, but I thought if they turn right the driver door eould take the brunt of the impact if u hit the wall. Idk?

I saw on the speed channel that they staRted turning left after a car hit the wall on the drivers side and the driver was killed when his head hIt the wall

sounds like good reasoning....Nick well let me ask this why do the horses turn left? The guy is in the middle....lol....

Well, back when I was crew chief on Ben Hur's chariot, we had a team of white horses and one of them was blind in the right eye. He was our best horse, so we decided that he could see better if we went left.

I tried to get a better shot of the blind one (last horse on the left), but in those days cameras weren't so hot.

Here I am trying to spy on the competition. I don't do that any more.

You think fancy pace laps by touring series is a new thing? Think again. Here we are on the parade lap at the Colosseum half-mile. We're the second chariot in from the bottom.

A few years back we brought the old Chariot chassis 07 back out and gave it a whirl at Darlington. Of course, NASCAR threw us out because we were faster than the Cup cars at the time. You will note that I have switched the horse with the blind right eye to the second slot, inside, since his eye seemed to be getting worse as you can see from the pic.

Sadly, cheating became rampant in the sport as can be seen here. That's when I decided to get out and become a tech official.

Well, I hope all this info clears up this mystery once and for all.

We are suppose to turn left ...... I THOUGHT TURN LEFT WAS DERIVED FROM HUSBANDS DUCKING FLYING OBJECTS THROWN BY P.OED WIFE.S ,WHO THREW RIGHT HANDED BACK IN THE OLD DAYS .WHEN THEY WERE ACTUALLY LEFT HANDED .... LEFTY'S WERE LAUGHED AT AND THOUGHT TO BE DUMB ..................................SIDE NOTE I AM RIGHT HANDED BUT TYP LEFT ... .............HOPE THERE IS NO TRUTH TO THAT BELIEF .....

Id say we turn right in most cases....

Thats funny. Most people who know nothing about racing always have sum smarta** comment like, "so, u rednecks just keep tuning left, huh. Seems boring." On dirt, u r indeed mostly turning right.

In England they do turn right! They go clockwise instead of counter-clockwise. That figures since they drive on the wrong side of the road too!

Here's a YouTube video of a British stock car race. To watch it,

Keeping the driver away from the wall is the primary reason I heard most about why we go CCW. It's also the reason that was explained to me as to why they go CW.

I was fortunate enough to get to England while in the military. Their short track racing is, to say the very least, interesting. Short, flat tracks with lots of banging....a lot of it intentional and ALLOWED in some divisions (or "Formulas"). Of course, that was the name of one of their divisions.....The Bangers - leave it to the Brits!

Fan safety at the places I went (Ipswich and Wisbech) left something to be desired.

There was one division (Superstox) that went counter clockwise. (They look sort of like a winged, super heavy duty sprint car).

Here's a link to their big racing organization (or should I say "Organisation")....

Nick, i must admit, that was a very uhhhhh interesteing aspect. Im sure shortly after the roman conquest is when you invented stagger.

I am curious about one thing though, where was Tom "Ceasar Augustas" Taylor during this time? Surely he would of posed in atleast one picture.

Tom and I have an agreement signed in virtual blood. He won't tell any "back in the day" stories about me and I won't spill the beans about him. He's already tried to implicate me in several events in College Station and/or Mexico that I have absolutely no memory of whatsoever.

So, I'll let Tom tell the tale of about the time he tried to pick the Emperor's favorite concubine by telling her he was King Tut and part of Leroy Brooks' crew. Ha! I can't remember how he got out of having to face some hungry lions in the pre-chariot race festivities, but he lived to tell about it.

I'm not going to tell y'all about it because we have this agreement, see?

Only the best go 8 abreast!

So, I am away a few days, and Cory has to get on here and talk some trash.

Very sorry to see you suffering the early stages of Alzheimer's...................

But let me refresh your memory on some of your early racing...

While Nick and I were in the big leagues of Chariot racing, Cory was making a name for himself on the short courses.

here he is working his way to the front in his very innovative creation of his own design..........

post-21-1338747300.jpg

The only problem with all this is I would have thought Cory wear only wear this type of clothing while racing. But he makes quite a stir there on certain streets in Austin..........

But, I gotta also give Cory some credit. he has managed to stay with the times, and he has accumulated quite a stable of race cars. Some of them have a little time on them, but he manages as best as he can.

Here is a recent pic of Cory's stable of cutting edge technology racers...

Remember that little Fraulein I am married to...........takes more than a pack of lions to scare me these days........

Tom,

Great to see Cory has plans to move into the trucks. I think that truck bed he has ready should be able to accommodate that piano he drags around behind his Pro Mod. LOL
