Moore edges LaBarge in “TPS Squeaker” at SAS

San Antonio, Texas -- In the closest racing of the season, the Texas Pro Sedans touring series visited the Alamo city for the second of three 2004 races on Saturday night, July 10th at San Antonio Speedway.

The Texas Pro Sedans 20 Lap Feature Race winner was Donnie Moore of Hutto, Texas in the George Merrell VW Scirocco. The Qualifying Heat Races were won by Moore and Bill LaBarge of Bryan in his BMW.

The Feature race began with pole sitter Donnie Moore taking the lead for the first thirteen laps. He was trailed closely by LaBarge’s BMW until Tony Johnson moved his Ford Mustang into second place and began to attempt to pass Moore. Johnson then fell back to fourth behind Bryce Dishman’s Ford Mustang. Johnson was plagued by a disconnected spark plug wire.

Bill LaBarge appropriated the lead from Donnie Moore on lap fourteen and held his close lead over Moore until a spin by Candy Hogan brought out the yellow flag with two laps remaining in the race. The lead changed hands again on the restart with Donnie Moore passing LaBarge and hanging on to win with only a .78 seconds margin of victory over second place Bill LaBarge.

The third and fourth place finish was even closer. Bryce Dishman’s Ford Mustang and Jamie Garner’s 2001 VW Sedan came into contact with their cars at turn four of the checker flag lap. They crossed the finish line, in side-to-side contact, with Dishman edging Garner by four inches.

The win was Donnie Moore’s fourth of the season. He extends his point’s lead to a narrow 23-point margin over Bill LaBarge who moves into second place in the standings over Lalo Leal of Corpus Christi. Leal passed up the SAS race and fades into the third place point’s position.

The San Antonio based Texas Pro Sedans touring series is conducting their 29th consecutive year of four-cylinder stock car racing in Texas during 2004. The San Antonio Speedway race was the seventh event of the 2004 season and marked the halfway point of the schedule.

The next Texas Pro Sedans race is scheduled for Saturday night, July 17 at Thunder Hill

Raceway in Kyle, Texas.
