trbfan
The 11, 18 and 20 teams were found to be using an illegal oil pan in post-tech inspections. Decisions will be announced Tuesday regarding this. "From Nascar web site" It sounds a bit more serious than a simple oil pan issue. According to Jayski a normal oil pan weighs 4 pounds, and the Joe Gibbs oil pans weighed 20-30 pounds. Sounds like they were trying to fidget with the weights in the car. NickHolt
Yes, sir. Lower that center of gravity height. That's a bunch of weight if those number are correct. Nick

Pacecar
My Champ steel wet sump oil pan (with all the windage trays, baffles, swing doors) weighs 16 pounds. Maybe a pure stock Chevy pan weighs 4 pounds. To me, a 25 pound Joe Gibbs dry sump pan doesn't seem like a deliberate cheating as a "heavier" than normal race pan. Now if it was made with some tungsten material (heavy metal) and weighed over 50 pounds, then I'd think it was deliberate to sneak "hidden ballast" by Nascar. Whether it is illegal is a different question. Nascar Cup has has no rule on oil pan maximum weight. The oil pan on an engine can be designed to add structural stiffness to the engine block crankcase. This added stiffness helps to keep the cylinder bores and main bearing bores from distorting. Also, engine stiffness (recall front engine block plates) can be incorporated into the chassis design to increase chassis stiffness. Perhaps the stiff oil pan was being bolted to a chassis crossmember. Good engineering. Seems to me that Toyota designed a better mousetrap, and wanted to keep that info from Nascar by not disclosing the design change to them. I have to believe that if numerous Nascar officials knew about a better design, it wouldn't be too long before some info leaked to other teams. rebelracewriter
The report "I heard" was that it was NOT submitted to NA$CAR for approval, ergo illegal.....Nothing was "said" about weight advantage/disadvantage.....
SASPEEDRACER24
As found on Jayski.com... JGR teams face penalties for oil pans: UPDATE: The Joe Gibbs Racing teams of #18-Kyle Busch, #11-Denny Hamlin and #20-Joey Logano all face possible penalties after an issue was discovered in inspection Friday morning at Michigan before practice began. John Darby, Cup series director, said that all three Gibbs cars had oil pans that had not been submitted for approval before competition. "We had them pull (those) off and put what we're accustomed to, what has been submitted back on their cars,'' Darby said. All three teams face possible penalties for the infraction. "Chances are great (a penalty) wouldn't involve points,'' Darby said.(Hampton Roads)(6-17-2011) UPDATE: Joe Gibbs Racing had unapproved- and unusually heavy - oil pans seized from its three NASCAR Sprint Cup cars Friday morning at Michigan International Speedway. Officially, the issue was that the oil pans had not been submitted for approval by NASCAR, a standard procedure for the thousands of parts and pieces on race cars. But a bigger issue ultimately might be weight. While a standard NASCAR Sprint Cup oil pan weighs about 4 pounds, the three taken off the Gibbs cars weighed an estimated 20-30 pounds apiece. Competitors contacted by SPEED.com and FOXSports.com said the heavy oil pans would allow the teams to remove weight elsewhere in the car and put it low and on the front of the car, which could provide a handling advantage, perhaps a substantial one. Officials did not penalize JGR at the track but said in a statement, "NASCAR will discuss early next week if there will be any additional penalties assessed to these three teams."(SPEED)(6-18-2011)

supertx
NASCAR ought to have 42 cars when you buy your way in to NASCAR you just show up at the track and you draw for what ever car that race. They should make about 300 HP wouldn't want them running to fast, were anybody could be a race car driver old, young or no talent. nightmoves 99
Supertex, your right.... from what Joe Gibbs said before the cup race, the pans weren't illegal just not 'preapproved'. Sounds like the tech guys had someone outsmart them and had to stop it before more teams started thinking for themselves!
racer61
And Gibbs wins with "legal" pans. Now what are you guys gonna complain about?
