Gustin gallops out of Jamestown with USMTS loot

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (June 11) – The USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour powered by Swan Energy swept into the Jamestown Speedway Saturday night and just like twelve other times this year, Ryan Gustin swept out of town with the biggest paycheck.

Gustin started third in the feature race and took the lead from polesitter Ryan Mikkelson with two laps in the books. From there ‘The Reaper’ led the final 38 laps of the WIX Filters “A” Main and rolled to his thirteenth USMTS victory of the season.

The 20-year-old from Marshalltown, Iowa, had to work for every penny of his $2,000 payday though as caution flags on laps 19 and 28 kept the field within striking distance.

Al Hejna clawed his way to second from the fifteenth starting spot and pulled alongside Gustin midway through the race. Gustin immediately switched from his high line to the low side to thwart Hejna’s efforts.

Later on, Zack VanderBeek closed in on the leader using the high side of the high-banked quarter-mile clay oval but as quickly as he saw the nose of VanderBeek’s machine Gustin was up on the cushion to take control of the fast lane.

From there, Gustin held off VanderBeek to the checkered flag while Ward Imrie of Winnipeg was impressive in his career-first USMTS start, coming from fourteenth to finish third and earn the Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award.

With Jon Tesch missing Saturday’s event due to a family commitment, Gustin leap-frogged into the runner-up spot in the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Great Plains Region points standings behind Kelly Shryock, who finished fourth in the main event.

Friday’s winner Corey Dripps took fifth, Rodney Sanders was sixth, Chase Junghans finished seventh, Aaron Turnbull grabbed eighth, Hejna wound up ninth and Jamestown’s Jason Grimes rounded out the top ten finishers.

Although the journey through the Dakotas is over, the chaos is just beginning as the tireless USMTS titans invade the Nobles County Speedway in Worthington, Minn., on Sunday for the last of five straight events in the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Great Plains Region as part of a grueling stretch of 17 races over the course of 19 days during Summer Speedweeks.

Shryock won the inaugural event at Worthington in 2007 while the 2008 edition was twice rained-out. Tesch snared the checkered flag in 2009 and Gustin showed the way in last year’s tilt.

The night’s racing action will also feature the hard-as-nails Iron Man Challenge for USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars ($1,000 to win) and USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods ($500 to win). Also on the racing card will be USRA Hobby Stocks racing for track and national points in the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series, plus Sportsmans and Outlaw Mini-Sprints.

Gates open at 4 p.m., hot laps are scheduled for 5:30 and the first heat race takes to the track at 6 p.m.

Race fans can pick up $2-off coupons for Sunday's event at both Casey's General Stores locations in Worthington. Check out www.caseys.com for more information or to find the location nearest you.

The Nobles County Speedway is a 1/4-mile semi-banked clay oval located off of I-90 at Exit 43, then 0.4 mile south on SR 59, then 0.4 mile west on Oxford St., then 0.2 mile north on McMullan (Pioneer Village). For more information, call the track hotline at (507) 360-3825 or check out www.noblescountyspeedway.net online.
