rebelracewriter
Shipman Shows the Way in NCRA Modified Action at 81 Speedway! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Park City, Kansas – May 28, 2011 - Ross Shipman of Belle Plaine, Kansas surprised the masses as he put in one of the best runs of his racing career in winning the National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Smiley’s Racing Products modified feature event Saturday night at 81 Speedway in Park City. Richard Wilson started on the pole for the twenty-five lap feature and quickly took the lead at the drop of the green flag. A couple of cautions delayed the action after one lap was in the books but once racing action resumed Shipman, who started on the outside front row, got a run in turns three and four and passed Wilson down the front stretch to take the lead on lap two. Shipman, aboard the #91 Race Engines by Dennis powered S&S race cars/Hebbs Automotive Machine, quickly opened up a sizeable ten car length lead by lap four. By this time the battle for the runner up position would change as eighth starting Austin Allen got around Wilson while behind him, “B” feature winner Casey McClaskey started making his way towards the front from his eleventh starting position. The caution would wave for the final time on lap eight when Ted Tolin spun at the bottom of turns one and two. The final restart saw Shipman once again set the pace followed by Allen, Wilson, McClaskey and fourth starting Don Hodge. The double file restart worked to McClaskey’s advantage as he passed Wilson and Allen and move into the runner up position. By this time Shipman had once again stretched his lead, this time by a half straightaway with ten laps to go. It was at this time when third starting Bill Seamers, who faded several positions at the start of the feature, had worked his way into the third position and began putting pressure on McClaskey for the runner up position. Not to be out done, fifteenth starting Kirk Coleman had worked his way through the field and into the fourth position with just five laps remaining. But Coleman wasn’t done there as he worked his way past Seamers and McClaskey into the runner up spot. But Coleman would run out of laps and while he cut the leaders advantage from a half stretch lead to three car lengths, he just ran out of time at the end allowing Shipman to claim his first career NCRA modified feature victory. Coleman, who had also worked his way through the “C” feature and “B” feature would come home second while fourteenth starting Mike Jarvis found the bottom of the track to his liking near the races midway point to come home third. McClaskey settled for fourth while Allen faded to a fifth place finish. Five heat races were run for the 41 car field with Scott Phillips, Bo Key, Shipman, Wilson and Jason McGehee all taking victories. Jerrod Reimer claimed the twelve lap “C” feature while McClaskey took home the fifteen lap “B” feature honors. It was a rough night for a couple former series champions. First off, five time series champion and the career series feature winner Brian Franz of Halstead, Kansas was involved in a three car tangle in his fifth heat race causing a bent frame thus ending his night. 2008 series champion Marc Hurd of Wichita had a transfer position locked up in the “B” feature but a flat left rear tire sent him to the pits under caution. Hurd’s crew quickly got the flat changed and charged from the back of the field but would fall one transfer position short. The next appearance for the NCRA modified division will be tomorrow (Sunday) Memorial Day weekend night at “The Hummer,” Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kansas in the series first appearance since 2008.
