ASCS Invades Heart O’ Texas for First Time!

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (June 14, 2004) – The American Sprint Car Series invades Heart O’ Texas Speedway in Waco for the first time this Friday night, as the cars and stars of the Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores ASCS Gulf South Region take to the ¼-mile semi-banked clay oval.

In addition to the top guns of the ASCS Gulf South Region, including top championship contenders Todd Johnson and Greg Rilat, defending American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region champion Kevin Ramey of Fort Worth, TX, is expected to be in action as well. Ramey recently scored his first ASCS victory of the season by topping the Sooner Region event at Cowtown Speedway in Kennedale, TX, on May 29.

Through the Gulf South Region’s first four events of the 2004 season, an intense championship points battle is developing between Todd Johnson of Eunice, LA, and Texas City, TX, native Greg Rilat. Johnson, who finished second in Gulf South points in 2002, currently holds just a two-point advantage over 2003 points runner-up Rilat, who scored his first Gulf South feature victory of the season this past Saturday night at Champion Park Speedway in Haughton, LA.

Ranked third in points, just 30 markers out of the lead, is Humble, TX, driver Chris Sweeney, with Jerry Bell of Rowlett, TX, and Brad Stokes of Kountze, TX, tied for fourth, just four more points back.

Other top Gulf South guns expected to be on hand include Tina Creswell (New Braunfels, TX), Scottie McDonald (Porter, TX), Rick Behr (Houston, TX), Brandon Corn (Hearne, TX), Larry Howery (Hearne, TX), Richard Holt (McCloud, TX) Stephen Chevallier (Downsville, LA) and David Forbis (Bossier City, LA).

Approximately 30 cars are expected for Friday night’s card, which is slated to get under way at 8:00 p.m.

Waco’s Heart O’ Texas Speedway is located off I-35 Exit 343 (FM 308), then 0.6 miles north on east frontage road. For additional information, contact the track at 254-829-2294.

The 2004 Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores ASCS Gulf South Region slate consists of 16 events at eleven different tracks throughout Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.
