rebelracewriter
Fall Classic Spectacular @ Shady Oaks Speedway, 11/5-6/!0 By J M Hallas Goliad, Tx.(Nov. 5Th, 2010) As the season wound down Goliad's Shady Oaks Speedway played to their Fall Classic Spectacular on the 1/3 mile semi-banked dirt oval. Drivers from the Houston, Austin and Corpus areas joined the locals for Friday night qualifying in the Late Models, Modifieds, Limited Modifieds, Super Stocks and Street Stocks. The always popular Farm Trucks ran a heat and feature as a support class. In the five featured classes heats and an “A” qualifier were run taking the top 10 out of each feature to Saturday nights main events. Heats and/or “B” mains will fill the remainder of the fields, with the Mini Stocks running as the Saturday night support class. Hardcastle Hauls to Modified Main Qualifier Nick Hardcastle got a big jump as green flew on the 15-lap Modified qualifier. In the pack Dustin Brandl went around and collected Ben Ketteman. The next start saw Terry Woodall and Steve Whiteaker both spin coming off turn 4 to bring about a third shot at a start. When green finally waved Hardcastle took the point, with Whiteaker snagging second from Corey Babbitt. Brandl would loop it again on lap 2 to bring out a caution. Once back under green, Whiteaker took a quick look low on Hardcastle who was able to pull ahead off turn 2. Dennis Taylor brought out a caution on lap 4 when he spun in turn 3. As green waved again Babbitt went around in turn 2 for a quick yellow. Whiteaker again tried to dive under Hardcastle on the restart while Woodall took third from Mike McCarthy. By lap 5 Babbitt had worked his back up into the top five getting the spot from Joe O'Bryan. At the crossed flags it was Hardcastle and Whiteaker breaking away with Woodall, McCarthy and Babbitt rounding out the top five. Babbitt was able to go past McCarthy on lap 8 for fourth. Up front Whiteaker was turning up the heat on Hardcastle until he got loose in turn 3 nearly going around and giving up ground to Hardcastle. This was all Hardcastle needed as he then cruised on to score the win. The 14-car, 15 lap Limited Modified feature had Vince Louden grab the lead only to have Larry Jernigan get tagged and go around collecting Abraham Mares and Tryce Hermes. The next start saw Louden again get out front while Steve Whiteaker jr. got second from Dustin Butcher, with track titlist Brian Brooks and David Meredith falling in line. Whiteaker began to take looks low on Louden going into to turn 1. By lap 5 the top three had checked out on Brooks who had a gap to Meredith and Battleground Speedway track owner, Mike Walling. At halfway the top five remained Louden, Whiteaker, Butcher, Brooks and Meredith. Hermes went over the hill in turn 3 to bring out the yellow on lap 9. Once back to green Whiteaker charged along side Louden, while Meredith got by Brooks for fourth. Whiteaker kept the nose inside Louden, but then pulled off quickly on lap 11 as Mares went over turns 1-2 to bring out a caution. On the restart Butcher picked up the challenge on Louden with GW Hessong getting fourth from Meredith. Butcher got under Louden to take the point on lap 12 and was able to inch away for the victory. Holley wasted little time grabbing the spot from Mit. Wagner on lap 2, while Begnaud picked off third from Mic. Wagner. The two Wagners tangled in between turn 3-4 to bring out a caution and end the night for Mic. Wagner. Once back under green Holley easily motored away from Mit. Wagner and Begnaud. As Holley increased his margin, Begnaud snared second from Mit. Wagner on lap 8. Begnaud was too far behind Holley to mount any kind of challenge as Holley easily powered his way to the checkers. Going into turn Abraham Mares made contact with Leon Hinojosa sending him around setting off a melee that collected about half the pack. On the second try Hinojosa beat Farquar to turn 1 with track champ, Leland Waddell getting second, but Mares broke and stopped for another complete restart. The third time was a charm with Hinojosa again getting to turn 1 before Farquar who was being overtaken by Waddell. Waddell kept the pressure on Hinojosa as they built a margin over Farquar, David Kulhanek and Jerry Neal. Farquar's top five run ended with a flat right front on lap 4. After several tries low, Waddell jumped to the top and got past Hinojosa for the lead on lap 6. As Waddell put some distance on Hinojosa, Neal and Kulhanek battled for third. Behind the top five, Duane Toyne and Lucky Gilbert had their own fight going for sixth. With two to go Waddell began to slow giving Hinojosa the chance to move back in. Hinojosa got by the wounded ride of Waddell on the final lap to steal the win while Waddell coasted around to hold on to fourth. As green waved on the initial start track champion, Stephan Danielson jumped out front, but I-37 Raceway champ Wade Jones looped it in turn 2. Danielson again got the edge on the second start with John Lieta, Alan Kunkel and Chris Shafer in pursuit. Shafer drifted too high in turn 2 giving Matt Farris an opening. As Farris tried to sneak past Shafer he gave up fifth to Jones instead. By halfway Danielson had opened up a gap on Lieta and Kunkel while Shafer, Jones and Farris continued to scrap it out for fourth. Danielson ran up on slower traffic and got run high by a lapped car with Lieta able to get by for the lead on lap 10. This left Danielson side by side with Kunkel for second. Brian King had problems on lap 13 to bring out a yellow. On the restart Farris and Tony Blankenship went around with several other going over the turn 1 hill. Officials called for the checkers reverting to previous lap to determine the finish. Brandl eased away, while Jordan Glass and John Bonneau battled for fourth. Bonneau got the spot, then took over third from Ross, but pulled off with trouble a couple laps later. In the waning laps of the 15-lap feature Brandl started to show some smoke but Cope was not close enough to mount a late challenge. Brandl was able to take the checkers, but his truck gave out before he was able to get to pit exit leaving the track being pushed by a wrecker.
