Weather cancels Friday’s action, racing to resume Saturday morning

Bonus professional session added to loaded Saturday schedule

PETERSBURG, Va. (October 15, 2010) – Cold weather and scattered showers moved into southern Virginia Friday afternoon forcing the postponement of Friday’s action at the IHRA World Finals Nitro Jam Friday evening at Virginia Motorsports Park in Petersburg.

Racing will resume Saturday morning with a packed show that includes the crowning of champions in a dozen different professional and sportsman classes, a full Nitro Jam program and a bonus professional session which has been added to the afternoon schedule.

“Our top priority at the IHRA is the safety of our competitors and with the rain and cold temperatures we are seeing here this evening we feel it is in the best interest of all involved to postpone Friday and pick things back up Saturday morning,” said IHRA President Aaron Polburn. “We already had an incredible show on tap for Saturday and now it has gotten even bigger. Fans in attendance on Saturday will not only see the crowning of champions in all Nitro Jam and Summit racing classes, but they will also see a bonus professional session not originally in the schedule. All of this will be in addition to the great Nitro Jam show that we have planned for Saturday evening.”

With the postponement of Friday’s racing action the Saturday Nitro Jam has now gotten a whole lot bigger. In addition to the Nitro Jam professional show during the evening, Saturday afternoon will feature as assortment of different sportsman racing classes competing in the Tournament of Champions, Summit SuperSeries and the Summit All-Star race along with the regular Nitro Jam national event.

And by Saturday night as many as a dozen different drivers will be crowned world champion.

“With championships on the line you want everything to be perfect and tonight did not present the best opportunity to decide those winners in a safe manner,” Polburn said. “Our incredible track crew will work throughout the night to make sure this track is in pristine condition for tomorrow’s competition.”

Racing will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday morning with the first round of qualifying for the Nitro Jam national event, followed by the first round of time trials for the Tournament of Champions at 11:30 a.m.

The bonus round of professional racing, which will include Top Fuel and Pro Fuel Dragsters, Prostalgia Nitro Funny Cars, Street Boss and a number of additional classes, will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Sportsman racing will resume at 3 p.m. with the first two rounds of the Tournament of Champions, two time trials for the Summit SuperSeries and an additional qualifying session for Street Boss lasting until the Nitro Jam professional show.

FanFest will begin at 6 p.m. in the professional pit area followed promptly by two rounds of Nitro Jam professional racing and the finals of the Tournament of Champions and Summit SuperSeries beginning at 7 p.m.

An awards celebration honoring Saturday's winners will take place immediately following the Nitro Jam professional rounds.
