Josh42 Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 Shane was involved in a bad crash in terre haute while qualifying, apparently the car flipped and hit the wall and had the roll cage collapse he was unresponsive and airlifted out of there Quote
rebelracewriter Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 (edited) I did some site searching and the only word I've read is......his condition is grave. This just recently popped up.... http://www.popoffvalve.com/2010/10/9/17411...-at-terre-haute Edited October 10, 2010 by rebelracewriter Quote
Crazyhorse Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 bad deal... in my opinion one of the best race car drivers we have seen in decades. but i'm sure some witch hunters will want to throw something in there of his past. but when you are as good shane hmiel you get witch hunters. freakin' awesome race car driver! praying for the best. REBELRACER Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 regardless his past, he's still someones son and still a human. he was a good driver that made mistakes and paid for them. this is a bad deal, hate to hear about that happening to anybody. anyone who would find joy from another being injured like this is a miserable person. but you're right horse, there will be plenty of witch hunters out there ready to talk smack about him Quote
jwmbishop Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 I honestly believe the man has a lot of good going for him - his sobriety, his example of honesty and adressing his issues and turning his life around is a model example for anyone who is lost and seeking discovery of the right path. Not to make light of addictions and the damage they do to oneself and all the folks their lives touch but - I have heard it said that we all start out as cucumbers - some of us become pickles - and once we do there is no becoming a cucumber again. However in this analogy it's people like Shane who give hope that even a pickle can live the cucumber life and enjoy the rewards thereof (and I think this is more of a chalenge than never becoming a pickle in the first place)! This definately shows he is a great racer as far as hanging in there and pursuing even in the face of adversity! By all means my thoughts and prayers go out to him and his loved ones. Quote

rebelracewriter Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 I've seen numerous conflicting reports on various sites....ranging from awake, alert and able to move his arms to being in a medically induced coma due to brain swelling......Sadly I read a couple that either focused on his past or questioned if he should even be racing still....... txtom Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 Update from USAC-- USAC Sun. Afternoon Update on Shane Hmiel: Critical, But Stable USAC - 10/10/10 USAC driver Shane Hmiel remains in critical, but stable, condition at Indianapolis’ Methodist Hospital following his accident during qualifications for Saturday night’s Silver Crown Championship race at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track. Hmiel suffered fractures of the neck and back and is in the hospital’s intensive care unit awaiting surgery expected sometime in the next 24 hours. Steve Hmiel, Shane’s father and a former NASCAR crew chief, says his son has a “long road to recovery” and is quick to thank all the fans and friends who offered their concerns and prayers in the hours following the accident. “We are optimistic for Shane’s recovery,” stated USAC President/CEO Kevin Miller, and have committed our resources to the Hmiel family. “We will monitor Shane’s hospitalization and will provide updates on his progress.” Quote
