NickHolt Posted October 8, 2010 Report Posted October 8, 2010 Trey Mitchell Wrapping Up 2010 Season at Mason Dixon Meltdown Mooresville, North Carolina (October 8, 2010) - The 2010 season will all come to a close for Wimberley, Texas, native Trey Mitchell at the Newport Speedway in Newport, Tennessee on October 15-16th for the 200-lap PASS South series finale. This season was Mitchell’s second full season behind the wheel of a super late model and his first competing for a points championship and with one race remaining Mitchell will be the first to tell you that competing each race for points is totally different than just competing for the win on an individual race basis. “The biggest difference between racing for points and racing for the win is the decisions you make late in the race when you don’t have a winning car. Let’s face it not every race you are going to have a car capable of winning so you really need to be smart about getting the best possible finish you can every race; whether that means coming in for a late race adjustment or being conservative out on the race track. A lot of the times when you are just racing for the win its all or nothing every lap, almost like a checkers or wreckers attitude and that’s just not something you can do racing for points,” said Mitchell. Mitchell is tied for sixth in the series’ championship points standings and is just fourteen points out of fifth having competed in one race less than the competition. That stat alone shows how consistent Mitchell and company have been when compared to the majority of their competition. After getting a slow start to the 2010 season, only finishing in the top ten once; Mitchell then cranked out five top ten finishes over the final seven races including a fourth place finish at South Boston Speedway. One of those two finishes not in the top ten came at the hands of the high banked Newport Speedway. The #47 machine made it to top ten after a disappointing qualifying effort when a mid race accident ended Mitchell’s night prematurely. The early exit to what looked to be a promising run last time at Newport in addition to the fact the long offseason will officially begin after this weekend’s race has the twenty-one year old driver hungry to close out 2010 with a win. “We had a good run going last time there (Newport Speedway) and then got caught up in someone else’s mess coming through the field. If we can qualify within the top ten we should be better than last time and with Gary (Crooks) at the track with us this time we should be able to tune our car a little better than out last outing,” stated Mitchell. “I would say to finish fifth in PASS South points running one less race than everyone else as good as the competition has been this year would be a good accomplishment. It makes me wonder if we would have had a better start to the season we might have been in the fight for the championship right along with Preston (Peltier) and Ryan (Blaney).” The PASS South Mason Dixon 200 at the Newport Speedway kicks off Friday October 15th with practice for the super late models taking place from 12-4pm. The next day Saturday October 16th action starts with practice at noon followed my time trials at 4pm and racing at 6pm.
