Texas Pro Sedans huge success at C.C. Motor SpeedwayBy: Neil Upchurch, Texas Pro Sedans – Race Director

Corpus Christi, Texas -- The Texas Pro Sedans series celebrated their return to Corpus Christi for the first time in nine years by contesting one of the closest TPS races in nine years.

The TPS touring series visited C.C. Motor Speedway for the first of three 2004 races on Saturday night, May 29th. The 17 Texas Pro Sedans played to a very large grandstand crowd with sixteen cars taking the green flag for the 30 lap TPS feature race.

The Texas Pro Sedans event consisted of 2 laps of Qualifying Time Trials which saw a new CCMS/TPS track record posted by Lalo Leal of Corpus Christi. Leal turned a 15.560 second lap in his Ford Mustang edging five time TPS Champion Bill LaBarge of Bryan, who’s best lap was 15.570 in his BMW.

In the 30 Lap Feature Race, Leal took the lead over LaBarge on the green flag. The two veteran TPS drivers dueled with their fast four cylinder stock cars for the entire race. The event was slowed twice by yellow caution periods for a one car spin and a second yellow for front straight-a-way debris. Following TPS rules, yellow flag laps were not scored to assure spectator a full, 30 lap green flag race.

Lalo Leal won the TPS race by a mere .75 seconds over the runner-up Bill LaBarge.

A total of seven Texas Pro Sedan drivers completed the race on the lead lap. Recording 30 laps was Sergio Hexsel of San Antonio with a 3rd place in his VW Scirocco. Fourth went to Randy Larsen of Wimberley in his VW Karmen Ghia. Fifth was won by Mike Knotts of Universal City in his #48 VW Scirocco. Former TPS Champion Donnie Moore of Hutto was 6th in the George Merrell VW Scirocco. Rounding out first seven drivers was Jamie Garner of San Antonio in his 2001 VW Sedan.

The TPS Championship Point Standings were re-arranged with Lalo Leal and Bill LaBarge now tied at 47 points. Donnie Moore is third with 45 points.

The next Texas Pro Sedans race will be held at San Antonio Speedway on Saturday night, June 5.
