JEFF WATERMAN EARNS HAWKEYE DIRT TOUR WIN IN CRESCO

June 24, 2010 | By: Jeff Werderman

[Cresco, IA] - - Race fans of the JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour for IMCA Modifieds saw a third different winner in as many races, and did he ever have to earn it! Jeff Waterman had to battle Mark Elliott and Rich Smith to the bitter end for the win at Cresco Speedway on June 24, 2010.

Pole sitter Dan Chapman took the lead at the drop of the green flag, but quickly found himself battling Rich Smith and Jeff Waterman for lead. Smith moved to the high side and wrestled the lead away from Chapman on lap four. Chapman and Waterman put pressure on the new leader, but couldn't manage to get around Smith.

Smith would open up a commanding lead on the field by lap ten leaving the rest of the field to battle for second place. Chapman, Waterman, and HDT point leader coming into tonight's event Richie Gustin, were locked in a dogfight for the runner up spot.

Two quick caution flags flew in the middle of the Kwik Star of Cresco A-Main and tightened the field. One of which was for Gustin who lost a driveshaft and was forced to the pit area early. When racing resumed on lap seventeen, the war for the top spot heated up.

Smith was caught in a brawl for the win with Waterman and Mark Elliott. The threesome kept the fans at the Might Howard County Fair on their feet until the very end. The trio even went three-wide a few times for the lead.

On lap twenty-four, Waterman emerged from the tussle with the lead and would take the win by only a few car lengths. Elliott would edge Smith out for second.

The fight for the lead was not the only three car battle. Right behind the lead pack, Josh Foster, Mike Jergens, and Jay Noteboom put on a great show for the fans fighting for fourth. Foster would take fourth when the dust settled followed by Noteboom and Jergens.

Up next for the JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour is a trip to the Lee County Speedway for the 3rd Annual Liberty Cup on Thursday, July 1, 2010. IMCA Stock Cars will also be trackside as it is the final night of the IMCA Great American Stock Car Series. Both A-Mains will pay $1,000 to the winner. It promises to be a "can't miss" event on any race fan's schedule. To learn more about the JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour, log onto the tour's web site at www.dirttour.com.
