The Greatest Spectacle in Racing!

I've been to five Indy 500s as a child, the last one was in 1981. Dad had talked about going this year but he has not been feeling well lately. If he would have gone this year it would have been 5 consecutive decades that he attended at least one Indy 500. He once went 16 years in a row. I remember getting up at 5 in the morning and hopping in the 4 door mazda RX-2 (the car that dad would eventually turn into a race car) and making the 2 hour trip to Indianapolis. Parking what seemed like miles from the track and walking strait to the KFC which was open at 8 in the morning for that day to get a bucket of chicken. Dad would walk so fast that me, mom, and grandma could not keep up and he would have to wait every few blocks for us to catch up. Dads not that fast anymore. When we finally got into the stands we would all sit down and eat our chicken and watch the prerace ceremonies. It seemed to take forever for the race to start but when it did I was the happiest kid in all of Indiana. I miss those days.

I love the 500, it is the one Indy car race that I will not miss every year. BUT there are empty seats there it looks like... the series has to find a way to get an American presence back in the series to get the race back to what it once was. The 500 is now the prelude to the main event on Memorial Day weekend... the World 600, didn't used to be like that. But that's when the Foyt, the Unsers, Mears, Rutherford, Johncock, Dallenbach, and the list goes on were the one's doin it. Mario Andretti was an outside coming in, I remember in the 80's when Joselie Garza snuck up on us that one year!

Seems the Indy race has just lost some appeal here in the U.S.

Am glad to see Jack Nicholson at a cool event other than a Lakers game!
