rebelracewriter
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Thursday, May 27, 2010 Dripps’ dry spell ends with dominating drive at Allison ALLISON, Iowa (May 27) – Corey Dripps got stronger as the racing season wore on last year, ending the 2009 campaign with four straight top-five finishes and capturing a USRA Modified win in the 23rd Annual Musco Lighting Fall Challenge at the Southern Iowa Speedway. If that holds true for 2010, the rest of his USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour might be in trouble. Thursday night at the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa, the 37-year-old from Waterloo, Iowa, was nearly perfect as he dominated his heat race, drew the pole for the main event and then led all 30 laps of the nightcap to pocket the $2,000 winner’s share of the purse. The win was his first on the USMTS trail since an April Fools Day triumph at the Hancock County Speedway in Britt, Iowa, in 2005. The second event of the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Central States Region presented by Arnold Motor Supply saw 36 USMTS Modifieds from nine States check in for battle on a picture-perfect night for racing in the Hawkeye State. When the green flag fell on the 30-lap main event, Dripps withstood an early challenge from Johnny Scott of Las Cruces, N.M., but Dripps expanded his advantage to ten car lengths over the first ten laps over the current DandyLand Farms Rookie of the Year points leader. A caution flag on lap 11 kept the field within striking distance, but Dripps was flawless on the restart and powered away from the field. The second and final yellow flag waved with just four laps to go and erased Dripps’ full straight-away advantage, but once again he stretched out his lead after the restart and streaked beneath the checkered flags unchallenged. Nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock grabbed runner-up honors Thursday night while current Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Central States Region points leader Ryan Gustin clawed his way to a third-place finish after starting 13th on the 24-car grid. Gustin passed Dripps on the final lap of the feature race to earn his first USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour win on Aug. 28, 2008, at the Highway 3 Raceway. A disqualification in his heat race Thursday night put the 19-year-old from Marshalltown, Iowa, at the rear of the Real Racing Wheels “B” Main, but he thrilled the crowd with a final-turn pass of Tommy Weder Jr. to take the checkers and earn a spot in the WIX Filters “A” Main. Tommy Myer finished fourth in the main event with Al Hejna rounding out the top five at the flagstand. Sixth went to Jon Tesch, Scott held on for seventh, Ryan Dolan passed six cars to get to eighth, Dereck Ramirez was ninth and Steve Wetzstein completed the top ten. Ryan Ruter earned the AFCO Pole Award after a last-lap pass to win the first heat race of the night. Although he redrew the eighth starting spot, Ruter was battling among the top five runners when mechanical woes ended his run with four laps left in the feature. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION … Friday night will find the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour at the Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn., for the 3rd Annual Guttormson Memorial. The 1/3-mile semi-banked clay oval always provides for exciting side-by-side racing from the drop of the first green flag to the final checkered flag. Film crews will be on hand to record some promotional on-track action and fan footage for Dirt Knights – the upcoming dirt track racing docu-drama television series set to debut in January of 2011 on the VERSUS cable sports network. Dirt Knights is an on-going dramatic series of one-hour programs that will air twice a week for 13 weeks with each episode reaching more than 75 million households. The show will follow Dripps, Gustin, Hejna, Tesch and Mike Spaulding as they compete in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship. Past winners at the Chateau Raceway include Jason Hughes, 2008 USMTS National Champion Tim Donlinger, 2007 USMTS National Champion Jason Krohn, Myer, Tesch, Shryock and Mike Chasteen. No driver has ever won two USMTS main events at the lightning-fast Lansing bullring. Pits open at 5 p.m. and grandstand gates open at 5:30 with hot laps at 7 and racing to follow. Also racing Friday night will be IMCA Stock Cars, WISSOTA Street Stocks, WISSOTA Midwest Mods and Pure Stocks. Race fans can pick up $2-off grandstand admission coupons on race day at Casey's General Store locations in Austin, Mantorville, Owatonna, Rochester, Stewartville and West Concord. The Chateau Raceway is located 5.0 miles north of Austin on US 218 to the Lansing exit, then 1.3 miles eat on CR 2, then 0.4 mile south on CR 25, then 0.3 mile east .
