Gustin garners ninth USMTS victory at 9th Annual Spring Classic

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (May 26) – After a nearly six-week hiatus, the stars and cars of the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour jumped back into high gear Wednesday at the Southern Iowa Speedway for five straight nights of racing action at five dirt ovals during the Memorial Day Weekend.

Forty-two fire-breathing Modifieds filled the pit area Oskaloosa, Iowa, speedplant for the 9th Annual Spring Classic and the 31st time the United States Modified Touring Series has churned the clay at the Mahaska County Monster.

The 30-lap main event was highlighted by exciting two- and three-wide battles throughout the 26-car field, but the recipient of the winner’s trophy was sealed when Ryan Gustin took the green flag.

Piloting the #19r Gressel Racing Hughes Chassis, Gustin handily won his eight-lap heat race, then drew the outside of the front row for the WIX Filters “A” Main. The 19-year-old from Marshalltown, Iowa, beat polesitter Ryan Ruter to the flagstand by a bumper to lead the first lap, but that proved to be as close as anybody would get for the remainder of the contest.

Zack VanderBeek debuted his “Keeping the Dream Alive” Victory Junction livery Wednesday and his hopes for a victory at his home track were kept alive when the race’s second caution slowed the pace with nine laps to go.

VanderBeek used the low side of the half-mile clay oval to carry a one-car-length advantage over Gustin into the first turn, but Gustin rocketed off of the high side of the second turn and kept his race-long lead as the pair completed lap 22.

Over the final eight laps, Gustin padded his lead and streaked beneath the checkered flags 2.538 seconds ahead of VanderBeek.

After storming his way from 16th on the starting grid to third in just 17 laps, Al Hejna’s first contest of the 2010 campaign ended with a third-place finish and earned him the PBM Performance Products Hard Charger Award.

Johnny Scott’s long drive from Las Cruces, N.M., earned him a fourth-place paycheck and extended his lead in the DandyLand Farms Rookie of the Year standings while Steve Wetzstein rounded out the top five finishers.

Sixth through tenth, respectively, went to Tommy Myer, Ruter, Ryan Dolan, Michael Long and 2008 USMTS National Champion Jason Krohn.

Gustin’s second win of the season was worth $2,000. It was his ninth career USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour triumph and his first at the Southern Iowa Speedway. All nine of his victories have come at nine different speedways, including Thursday’s venue: the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa, where Gustin scored his first win under the USMTS banner on Aug. 28, 2008, to become the youngest winner in USMTS history at the age of 17.

On Thursday, the rugged road warriors head north to the Highway 3 Raceway for the 9th Annual Butler County Spring Clash and the second points race in the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Central States Region presented by Arnold Motor Supply.

Jon Tesch captured last year’s event for his first win at the half-mile clay oval. Other former winners at H3R include Kelly Shryock (3 wins), Kevin Pittman (2), John Logue, Mike Sorensen, Johnny Saathoff, Ruter, Mark Noble, Mike Hejna, Tim Donlinger and Gustin.

The $2,000-to-win Butler County Fair sponsored event will kick off with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7. Also on the card that evening will be the Dart Iron Man Challenge for USRA Stock Cars racing for $600 to win, along with USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods ($300 to win) and USRA Hobby Stocks ($250 to win). Gates open at 5 p.m.

Race fans can pick up $2-off coupons on race day at the Casey's General Stores locations in Allison, Aplington and Clarksville. VanderBeek and his Victory Junction USMTS Modified will be on hand at the Allison location from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to greet fans and sign autographs.

The Highway 3 Raceway is located 0.3 miles north of SR 3 on S. Main St. (at the Butler County Fairgrounds). For more information, call 319-267-9977 or check out www.highway3raceway.com online.

Friday will find the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour at the Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn., for the first event in the Yeager Machine Upper Midwest Region. On Saturday, it's the first of five occasions this season that the touring titans tackle the popular Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn. Set your TIVO or DVR to record the Indy 500 and World 600 because the best racing on Sunday will be at the Dodge County Speedway in Kasson, Minn., for the 9th Annual Stars & Stripes Shootout.
