NickHolt
Thunder Hill Raceway's Jim Lynch has announced that THR will be strictly enforcing their noise limit rule for the remainder of the season. This rule applies to ALL cars competing at Thunder Hill Raceway, not just the local classes. The rule is quoted here: >>Mufflers are required. Exhaust muffled to a maximum of 96-decible sound level at 100 feet with the car under full acceleration.<< "We are trying very hard to be good neighbors to the residents living within earshot of the track," Mr. Lynch explained. "You can count on a track official checking cars with the DB meter every race from here on out." Cars not meeting the sound requirements will not be able to compete at the 3/8th-mile paved oval until the sound limitations are met. Truck99
Nick, Since we're not running time trials any more, how will the cars be checked individually? Thanks, cs
Josh42
The question I got is, Can you really tell the difference from someone that is hitting 96db from someone that is hitting 98db
jont66
The human ear probably can not hear the difference, but the gauge can. You have to draw the line somewhere, and 96db is the line.
Pacecar
The sound decibel scale is logrithmic (not linear). 98 db is really a sound that is 10 to the power of 9.8 stronger than the bare minimum of human hearing. 96 db is 10 to the power of 9.6 stronger than the bare minimum of human hearing. According to the calculations, a sound measured at 98 db is 37% louder than a sound measured at 96 db. Sound meters can distinguish between 96 db and 98 db. NeilTPS
Brian, Jim & Nick: As you know, even though Texas Pro Sedans Rules for years and Race Bulletins before each race state the 96db rule at Thunder Hill Raceway, all 21 TPS entrys for May 8 have been reminded again by an email from me on May 6. NickHolt
Chase, Since we're not running time trials any more, how will the cars be checked individually? My understanding is that the DB meter is not entirey cumulative. In other words, if two people are talking, one at 10 DB and the other at 15 DB, the meter does not add the 10 and 15 to read 25. It would read 15. Also, the DB meter is directional to some degree. Only when we start to get readings above 96 db will be start to single out cars for "solo" runs. Of course, as you have pointed out, it is far easier and much more clear-cut to take readings while only one car is on the track, as in time trials. This week the ARTS trucks have time trials.
