DIRTcar Racing UMP Weekly Points Update: Schlenk (Late Models) & Sweeney (Modifieds) Remain Atop National Standings

MARYVILLE, IL – May 12, 2010 – Rusty Schlenk of Jackson, Mich. (Late Models) and Randle Sweeney of Clifty, Ky. (Modifieds) remained atop DIRTcar Racing's UMP circuit national points standings with six weeks of weekly competition completed.

Schlenk, 23, continued to build a significant early-season edge in the DIRTcar Late Model points battle, extending his lead to 342 points (1,120-778) over Jason McBride of Carbondale, Ill., in races run through May 9. The Michigander's edge increased by a healthy 59 points after he scored a pair of top-10 finishes last weekend.

With rain hampering Schlenk's efforts to find a race close to home over the weekend of May 6-8 – among the cancellations were American Late Model Series events scheduled in Ohio on May 7 at Limaland Motorsports Park and May 8 at Fremont Speedway – he hit the road and went racing in the Land of Lincoln. He finished sixth (after winning a heat race) on May 8 at Fairbury (Ill.) American Legion Speedway and placed fifth in a Big 10 Series event on May 9 at Shepp's Speedway in Alexandria, Ill.

The big mover in the latest DIRTcar Late Model national points standings was Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., whose back-to-back victories at Fairbury and Shepp's vaulted him from seventh to third in the rankings.

The veteran Sweeney, meanwhile, saw his lead in the UMP Modified national points standings cut almost exactly in half, ending the weekend with a 39-point edge (999-960) over Devin Gilpin of Columbus, Ind. Sweeney entered the weekend with a 77-point cushion.

Sweeney, Gilpin and many other high-profile UMP Modified drivers invaded Soggy Bottom Raceway in Morgantown, Ky., on May 8 for the $3,000-to-win 'Monster Modified 40.' Trent Young of Hopkinsville, Ky., won the event over Sweeney, with Gilpin settling for a 16th-place finish.

National points leaders in DIRTcar Racing's six other divisions after six weeks of action include Tait Davenport of West Paducah, Ky. (Pro Late Models), Jimmy Cummins of Waterloo, Ill. (Sportsman), Scotty Oliver of Owensboro, Ky. (Limited Modifieds), Trevor Gamble of DeLeon Springs, Fla. (Stock Cars), Scott Mooers of Osteen, Fla. (Factory Stocks) and Michael Rittenberry of Clarksville, Tenn. (Sport Compacts).
