NickHolt
Hughes holds off Gustin, pockets USMTS loot at Lubbock LUBBOCK, Texas (May 2) – Jason Hughes of Westville, Okla., bested a field of 44 Modifieds Sunday afternoon as the USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series wrapped up a three-race weekend swing at the Lubbock Motor Speedway. The 35-year-old defending champion of the series earned the AFCO Pole Award during qualifying heat races, redrew the fourth starting position and then powered his way past Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D., on lap 6 en route to his fourth win of the season. Although he paced the final 34 circuits of the 40-lap WIX Filters “A” Main, the victory was anything but easy as Hughes had to withstand several challenges from Marshalltown, Iowa’s Ryan Gustin. Gustin made one last charge on the final lap, but came up less than two-tenths of a second short at the finish line. Tesch hung on for third while nine-time USMTS National Champion and 2007 USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series titleist Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, finished fourth after starting 15th on the 26-car grid. Saturday night’s winner, Rodney Sanders of nearby Happy, Texas, rounded out the top five finishers. P.J. Egbert, Randy Timms, Neal Flowers, Friday night winner Zack VanderBeek and Johnny Scott finished sixth through tenth, respectively. The $2,000 triumph was the 24th in the four-year history of the USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series for Hughes, and his 88th overall including his 64 UMSTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour wins. While he is still well short of Shryock’s 152 career National Tour wins, his Southern Series tally is three times that of Shryock’s 8 checkered flags. With the win, Hughes expanded his huge lead in the points standings, and now leads Shryock by 164 markers (871 to 717). Sanders jumped to third with 684 points while Morgan Bagley is just two back with 682. Jones is fifth with 677, followed by Timms (656), Scott Green (614), Dereck Ramirez (597), Steve Holzkamper (578) and VanderBeek (516). Moms get their babies back with the series off-duty next weekend, but the engines fire up again May 14-16 for another tripleheader weekend at three tracks in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. On Friday, the USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series makes its debut at the Grand Prairie Speedway, followed by a return to the Cowtown Speedway in Kennedale on Saturday and another blockbuster premier on Sunday at the Heart O’ Texas Speedway in Elm Mott.
