Golden Triangle Racers Gear-Up for Double Points This Friday - Special Treat for Fans...Autograph Night!

by Joy Graham

This Friday, April 23, all Golden Triangle Raceway Park classes will compete for double points. Of late, the action in the fast lane arena has been intense, but with this added incentive, drivers are sure to give it their all.

It will also be Autograph Night. During intermission fans will be allowed onto the track to meet with their favorite drivers and view their race cars up close. This is always a very popular event.

Last Friday, the United States Modified Touring Series, but on a class act. Five heats, two B-mains, and then the 40 lap feature which fielded 25 cars. Drivers came in from Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, New Mexico, Mississippi, Arkansas, and of course Louisiana and Texas to compete. What a show! Jason Hughes of Westville, OK won the big purse with Kelly Shryock of Fertile, IA placing second. Running third and making an impressive showing was local ace, John O. Whittington of Vidor.

Three local classes competed on the same program. The limited modifieds were out in full force. Brent Broussard, Paul White, and Shane Hebert captured the heat wins. You could tell from those early position rounds that the limited feature was really going to “rock and roll”. In fact, that’s exactly what a couple of ill-fated cars did on the third lap...rolled over! White took a nose dive in turn four. He was okay.

The next flip occurred following a push and shove match on the front straight. Dean Hollier lost control, made wall contact, and was suddenly flying high. He too was okay. Shane Hebert never made a bobble as he led the pack throughout the twenty lapper. Johnny Holden held off Josh Ferguson for the runner-up spot.

There was also good racing in the Street Stock division. Heat wins were posted by Ernest Haynes and Bubba Morgan with Stuart Sandoz and Dominic Gaskins following in second. In the feature, Gaskins grabbed the lead reins right out of the gate and never let go. Haynes and Stuart waged a wheel to wheel battle for second, but on the last lap Randy Seals served up a trump card and became the runner-up. Stuart placed 3rd with Haynes falling back to fifth behind Morgan.

Pure Stock were low on car count but high with enthusiasm. Ronnie Mekalip won the heat, but had to play second fiddle to Kasey Garvin in the “A”.

Golden Triangle Raceway Park is located on W. Hwy. 90 between Beaumont and China, Texas. Pit Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps underway by 7:30 and we go racing at 8:00. For more information about the Friday night races call 409-752-7200 or visit the track web page: www.gtrpbmt.
