To tech, or not to tech - that is the question....

i can honestly say . i have never had a problem with a teck man checking mine or our cars ..i welcome it ..never had a car dq.d ...i build our cars as close to the rules as possible .most do ..but knowingly go over the line in some cases isnt right ..NOT SAYING I HAVENT DONE IT ..LOL ... .....its up to the racers to be inovative ..but doing so can get you into trouble . every teck man has his own way .and what was fine with one isnt going to be fine with another ..that can be the troublesome part ...but we all know with out tecking ...you may aswell not have rules .. whats a baseball game without an umpire ...... i think if your going to be a teck man .you have to be strong willed and not let your friends be the deciding factor if you dq them or not ..i have seen that to many times ...and that just gets my chicken .....anyway i salute teck man ..its a tough job .and dont pay much .can cost you friends .in which to me wasnt much of a friend tobegin with ..so to teck man ...keep your head down looking and your tail end pointing towards others ..cuz one thing is for sure .if the others dont like your tecking ..your tail is right there for the kissing ...

If a tech guy is inspecting something like your camber for example and while checking that he can clearly see that you are running a 60 series tire and the rules say no wider than 75. Shouldn't he dq that driver? Or do they only check what they are set on checking and thats it regardless of other things that are clearly visible? But I do agree with teching hard. The rules are there for a reason and they need to be inforced and different things need to be teched each race not the same things over and over. Switch things up and throw em a curve ball.

I see nothing wrong with teching and i was DQ'ed for a digital tach last weekend. It was in the rules and i have been running for the past 3 years and didn't relieze it was in the rules(my bad and lesson learned). The only thing i do have a problem with is when they plan to tech all the top 4 cars for roller cams and a fellow racer tells the tech guy he needs to check for a digital tach on my car is wrong. If a fellow racer wants something teched on a car they need to protest it. the tech guys need to be equal and when they tech all cars they need to tech all cars the same!! I feel really bad about getting DQ'ed because that was my first time ever getting DQ'ed for a not approved part.

Fellow competotors should have nothing to do with tech! thats what protests are for.

Tech guys are going to see this discussion and sharpen their pencils a little more. Sheesh.

What do ya'll think about everybody, and your competitors, looking over the techs shoulders at your car? Should it be between the tech man and crew being teched at the moment? If your legal it shouldn't be a problem but at the same time you don't want to give out any free info.

Although tech process should be open and visible - there should be a boundary - only the car, team rep and tech inspector involved.

Any violation at any time.

If it is in the rules, it should be teched. We make 250 rules but only tech 4 things. What about the rest? If aluminum rods are illegal, check for them. If this kind of cam is illegal, check for them. If soaking air filters is illegal, check for them. Dont make up a bunch of rules and tell everyone this is how it is and then never look. Black and white is the only way to tech. Just as mr. brooks does. I have failed his tech once. You can bet your a$$ that that I checked that piece every race after.

I am for tech, I also believe who ever techs should have a thorough understanding of what they are teching. If your not a CPA then you shouldn't be doing others taxes. If there is truly are a grey area then the tie should go to the racer, make a clear interpretation with the grey area at hand for the following race event.

I'm not a CPA. I am an Enrolled Agent. And I have yet to meet a CPA who knows as much about the tax code as I do (excluding of course the CPAs who are also EAs that teach the classes I take every year).

CPAs are Public ACCOUNTANTS - that is they specialize in doing bookkeeping and auditing - so dropping your stuff on a 1040 is anciliary to that. They are required 18 hrs a year of continuing education - it can all be in customer service, double entry books, audit technics, technologies etc.

EAs are tax code specialists - not only are they the ONLY IRS representives that must pass a 16 hr test (with an 80% fail rate - higher than the 8 hr Bar exam lawyers take) administered by the IRS specifically on taxes (and ALL areas of taxation and representation - not just personal income) - all 24 hrs of required education each year are specifically tax code related. Plus they have to go through an FBI background check every four years at renewal - CPAs do not - so with a CPA you have a higher chance of accidentally getting a shady one...

So actually even if you ARE a CPA you "should" not be doing other people's taxes - even though you may! The perfect team is a CPA for the books and financial planning, an EA for the prep and tax planning and a tax lawyer for if the IRS get cagey on ya. Getting them all to agree is the fun part!

my dad disqualified me my first year the first time i came in the top 5..... the bad thing is that it was for exhaust that he and i fixed and he had wrote the new rule for the smaller exhaust at the beginning of that year just a simple over site and was told to let it go by the other tech man cause i was the tech mans son but he stood strong and even though i was so pissed at him for it it gave me(and several other people)a great appreciation for his teching skills and honesty as a tech man i new then that i would not race against anyone illegal from what he teched in my class........now as a car builder i have had several things that were questioned and have questioned several things myself.....even imca makes bad or whatever you want to call them calls sometimes i had designed a front end set up for the sport mods in my shop on the car with no computers and it was fast.............. 3 of the top 5 at the ice breaker that year got questioned for having my front end design on them but it was an oversight in the rules they said upper control arms could be relocated for caster and camber settings so i took it to the max and got away with it for several months until the ice breaker and the flag man is the one to notice it...... wonderful lol but it wasnt deemed illegal then but then 2 weeks later when brett root called me himself out of no where and we talked about it and he listened to my side and explained his side of it we both came away seeing the other sides point of goods and bads that is how it should be done fair but stern and be willing to talk to the person to find out what they were thinking and how they interpreted the rule and clarify it from there there is always gonna be grey areas and ppl to push into the dark grey areas like me i will push as far as i can thats just what car builders do we read and read and re read the rules trying to find that one thing to give us that little advantage and if we get caught we take it we dont cry to much that they are being to harsh or unfair we will scream and holler for a while trying to sway the techs decision but we know its all fair in the end....... now i have jack come look at any car i build for thr and he comes out several times during the build and i ask questions and he gives me explanations of his interpretation but you always try to sneak that one thing and thats what makes the ppl with no money fast is finding that grey area and figuring and looking and trying different things but mainly if you cheat be prepared to get disqualified and dont cry to much about it especially if it is a blatant infraction if it has no mechanical advantage curse scream and holler if they stand their ground go home fix it and come back and kick their @$$ with the minor infraction fixed and prove you dont need an electrical tach or do need those pink socks with the speed racer logo or what ever the case may be but fair and standing your ground when you make a call is the way to go in my opinion and jack has always been pretty fair as well as any tech man ive seen with a few exceptions
