shaking dodge

One of my bookkeepers asked me to test drive her RAM2500 Cummins 5spd as it had a funny vibration. As soon as I let out the clutch from the 2-3 shift the truck shook so bad that it cleaned out the dash! 4th gear was not as bad but still noticeable. Back down to 3rd and it blurred my vision!

I think its the pilot bearing - but its been so long since I've done troubleshooting that I am second guessing that (seem to recall pilot only showed up around a 1:1 trans ratio - like in high gear). No funny noises when putting my ear on the shift lever so I do not think its the trans shaft bearings....

4th is 1:1 (actually.98:1).

Her husband thinks its either the gear or the front bearing on the 3-4 carrier. It started popping out of third gear when he drove it last night. He's pulling it tomorrow. What a way to spend his day off!

I owned one Dodge. A red, turbo Shelby Daytona with the complete spoiler package. I was great fun. For the first 5,000 miles, anyway.

The whole steering column collapsed in my lap one night. Literally. The steering wheel and the whole steering column fell down. Hmmm. Luckily I was only going 70 on I-10 and was able to get it off the road without hitting anything. This was at about 6k miles.

Next, the splined ends on both half shafts prematurely wore to the point that they no longer drove the wheels. They finally gave up when I downshifted coming of an exit ramp... coasted to a stop. This was at 12k miles. Would you say the steel Dodge used was of slightly inferior quality???

And, of course, the O2 sensor was replaced, oh, maybe three times and the catalytic converter stunk up the car at about 15K, about the same time the A/C compressor took a dump. And, you guessed it, the turbo was the next to go. Oh, and the power steering pump failed somewhere along the way.

I guess I put a total of maybe 20k miles on the POS before I unloaded it while it was still under waranty.

But I will say that Mr. Shelby got his Shelby Edition Daytona to handle pretty darn good the few times it would actually run. He cut and extended the lower control arms, remounted the steering to remove some of the bump steer and put some huge Goodyears on some lightweight aluminum wheels. But most importantlhy, he sprung the car to remove most of the inherent understeer. Of course, when the turbo would kick in there was a bit of torque steer, but that was just part of the deal with a turbo on a FWD car.

Bottom line. I bet the problem in the transmission in the Dodge truck will turn out to be metal failure of some sort.

Its the 32 piece bearing set on the front of the 3-4 shaft. Supposed to be a 1 piece (or at least 2 races and 20 balls all contained in one unit)!

My step mother had a black Shelby Daytona. Never had a lick of trouble with it. Other than a stock 72 Omega 350 two barrel with 123K on it left the Shelby in the dust and embarassed her.

Maybe she didn't drive it quite as .... well, let's just say it didn't take all that long to get from San Antonio to Texas World Speedway with two radar detectors -one pointed where I was going and the other pointed where I had been. Escorts were somewhat directional in those days. So, it's safe to say I almost broke the speed limit at least twice in that car... I mean, it was supposed to be a performance car, right?

And, of course, as a suspension guy I simply had to test Mr. Shelby's work on some very nice Texas hill country roads every now and then..

But it's still no excuse for the steering column to fall apart! LOL
