Casey Smith returns to vie for 2010 Gulf Coast Championship

Austin, TX (April 5,2010) - Casey Smith will once again chase the Gulf Coast Championship in 2010. Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida and Mobile Int’l Speedway in Mobile, Alabama make up the ten race championship with five double header race weekends over a six month period.

At Mobile Smith, the 2007 Mobile Int’l Speedway track champion, actually struggled for consistency throughout the ’09 season. However, it was the complete opposite at Pensacola as Casey produced his best performance ever in all five Blizzard series races with several strong showings including three top fives with one more top ten.

“We’re really hoping we can just get back to where we were at Mobile a couple of years ago,” said Smith. “Obviously after winning the championship there in ‘07, we have our goals set very high at Mobile. At Pensacola we wanted to improve, which we did by far, having the best year we’ve ever had there. So now we expect to be in contention to win at both tracks every time we show up.”

Just as smith stated, a win at Five Flags Speedway is something that is more of an expectation than a goal this year. He has never won a race at the famous high banked half mile but feels that in 2010 that could all change.

“That is one thing that has eluded me for a while now and really gets to me when I think about it much,” stated the Texas based racer. “We were close there a couple of times last year, finishing second and third but that only counts when your playing horseshoes and that’s how were doing so its all about getting it done at the end of the night.

Unlike the last few years, Smith and the #99 Rapid Disposal team are carrying momentum into the Sunoco Gulf Coast Championship after a third place finish in this year’s Rattler 250, a race that has been a mechanical nightmare for Smith.

“Usually after the Rattler we are either having to fix a wrecked racecar or buying new parts because we’ve broken something major so it will be nice to do just a normal preparation for a change before we head to Pensacola,” joked Casey. “We’ve got to have a good run that first race because there are only five races at each track, so you don’t really have any room for error. One bad race will put you out of the points quick.”
