HUGHES CAPTURES FEATHERLITE FALL JAMBOREE WITH THRILLING LAST-LAP PASS; SHRYOCK BECOMES NINE-TIME USMTS NATIONAL CHAMPION

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. (Sept. 26) – It was a battle for the ages Saturday at the Deer Creek Speedway as Jason Hughes of Westville, Okla., won his second Featherlite Fall Jamboree title with a last-corner pass of Terry Phillips. The win was worth $9,500 and just .043 second separated the two at the finish line.

Meanwhile, Fertile, Iowa's Kelly Shryock wrapped up his unprecedented ninth USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship on a night to remember in Spring Valley, Minn.

A field of 108 entries was whittled down to just 32 for the 50-lap championship race, which was preceded by the Hanson Tire Laser Light Show featuring music and bright lights accompanied by a fireworks display.

But the real fireworks were yet to happen.

Dereck Ramirez of Woodward, Okla., drew the pole position for the three-wide start of the main event with Dustin Boney of Tonganoxie, Kan., to his right and Farmdale, Ohio's Scott Stiffler getting the outside front row slot in his maiden voyage to the 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval and the biggest dirt modified show on planet earth.

Boney edged in front to lead the first lap, but the pace was slowed halfway through the next lap as the caution flag waved after his brother, Justin Boney, spun his machine in turn 2. Three others found themselves partaking in the tangle, including defending Featherlite Fall Jamboree Champion Tim Donlinger who left the race on the hook of a tow truck with a disappointing last-place finish.

With the elder Boney also retiring from the race, Dustin led the field to the green flag for the restart and shot out to a two-car-length advantage by he end of the second orbit while Terry Phillips scooted around the outside of Ramirez to take the third spot.

One lap later, Phillips used the low side of the racing surface to get by Stiffler and closed up quickly on Boney's rear bumper. As the pack came around to complete the sixth lap, Phillips powered around the outside of Boney to take control. The second-generation racer from Springfield, Mo., stretched his lead to nearly ten car-lengths over the next five laps before the second and final yellow flag flew on lap 11 for Colt Mather's spin.

On the restart, Hughes picked off Boney to move into the runner-up spot and pulled up to the high line behind Phillips. Meanwhile, Ryan Gustin joined the fray and began challenging Boney for the third spot and keep his hopes of wearing the USMTS Casey's General Stores National Championship crown alive.

Gustin started 16th in the main event, giving him the opportunity to earn enough bonus points to make a charge for the title. When the green flag dropped, a win by Gustin coupled with Shryock finishing 16th or worse would make the 18-year-old from Marshalltown, Iowa, the eleventh USMTS Casey's General Stores National Champion.

After the lap-11 restart, the race went caution-free the remaining 39 laps. With Phillips leading the whole way, Hughes was glued to his bumper and shadowing his every move while Boney stayed close behind in third.

With 12 laps to go, Jeremy Payne of Springfield, Mo., began challenging Boney for the third position while Phillips and Hughes continued their two-car tango at the front of the pack. Meanwhile, the racing surface was turning black as it began to take rubber just as the lead duo came up on heavy lapped traffic.

The leaders danced in and out of traffic for the final ten laps, taking the white flag with Phillips and Hughes running nose to tail. The lapped car of Chad Kinder forced the leaders to choose a new lane, with Phillips diving low as they exited turn 2 while Hughes tucked his front bumper underneath the rear bumper of Kinder as they "bump-drafted" down the back-stretch.

As they raced through the final turn, Hughes cranked his steering wheel to the left and dove underneath Phillips as they exited the final corner. The record-setting standing-room-only crowd jumped to their feet in unison as Phillips and Hughes drag-raced side by side to the flagstand.

As they streaked beneath the checkered flags, the width of a bumper was all that separated them with Hughes getting the advantage and Phillips forced to settle for the runner-up paycheck.

Although he only led the final 100 feet, Hughes' series-leading 326nd lap led this season was worth an extra $1,000 as he etched his name in the record books as the only repeat champion in the eleven-year history of the Featherlite Fall Jamboree. Along with the advertised $6,000 winner's share of the purse, Hanson Tire Service upped the ante with an additional $2,500 added just prior to call of 'Gentlemen, start your engines,' bringing the total take for Hughes to $9,500.

In his first trip to the Featherlite Fall Jamboree, Phillips finished eighth, tenth and second to round out an impressive weekend while his teammate, Payne, was able to get around Boney for third after failing to qualify for the main event on Thursday and Friday.

Called "Mr. Excitement" by some, Corey Dripps might be more suited to "Mr. Consistency" after his recent performances. The Waterloo, Iowa, ace started 21st in Saturday's talent-laden field, but powered his way to a fifth-place finish to score the PBM Performance Products Hard Charger Award and his third top-5 finish of the weekend.

Gustin held on for a sixth-place finish and wound up second in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's General Stores National Championship in his first full season with the premier dirt modified series in America.

R.C. Whitwell earned the first Ruter Farms Long Tow Award, and made the 1,633-mile one-way trek from Tucson, Ariz., pay off with a seventh-place finish Saturday night. Rodney Sanders of Happy, Texas, came from the 22nd starting spot to place eighth, Watertown, S.D.'s Jon Tesch was ninth and Randy Timms of Wheatland, Okla., rounded out the top-10 finishers.

Prior to the start of the 50-lap feature, just two former Featherlite Fall Jamboree champions in attendance — Mark Noble and Kinder — had not qualified for the event. As previously announced, one name from the eligible past champions was to be drawn for a special past champions provisional starting spot. However, officials decided to award both competitors a slot in the $700-to-start contest. Kinder, the 2006 champion, raced from 32nd to 22nd while Noble, who won in 2002, clawed his way to a 15th-place finish after starting 31st.

Shryock's 12th-place finish in Saturday's finale garnered him his ninth USMTS title. Despite having just one victory during the 18-race Hunt for the USMTS Casey's General Stores National Championship, Shryock never once failed to finish a race and wound up pocketing the $10,000 champion's check with a 33-point margin (1,606 to 1,573) over Gustin.

Hughes had his hopes for claiming the title end with a crash during Friday night's Sunoco "A" Main, ended up third in the final standings with 1,546 markers. Friday night's winner, Zack VanderBeek, finished fourth with 1,497 points, followed by Sanders (1,494), Tesch (1,452), Donlinger (1,410), Tommy Myer (1,402), Ramirez (1,353) and Dripps (1,288).

NO REST FOR THE WICKED ...

While the USMTS Casey's General Stores National Tour has wrapped up business for the 2009 season, the fire is just beginning to heat up in the Lone Star State with the start of the Hunt for the USMTS Dirthead.com Southern Series Championship just a few days away. Presented by Dirt Modified Magazine, the eleven-race championship quest begins with a tripleheader at the Battleground Speedway in Highlands, Texas, this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 1-3.

The event will carry a top prize of $1,000 on Thursday, then increase to $2,000 to win on Friday and $3,000 to win on Saturday.

Hughes comes into the event as the defending champion and current points leader in the USMTS Dirthead.com Southern Series ... but just four points ahead of Shryock. Sanders is third with 42 points, followed by Steven Whiteaker Jr. (38), Shave Hebert (19), Morgan Bagley (18), Dereck Ramirez (18), Bryan Rowland (17), Chris Henigan (15) and Jon Tesch (15).

Also on the card will be USRA Limited Modifieds.

The Battleground Speedway is a 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval located east of Houston on I-10 to Highland Exit 787, then 4.0 miles north on FM 2100 (Crosby Lynchburg Rd.). For more information, call 832-421-RACE or check out www.battlegroundspeedway.net online.
