CUMMINS CONQUERS OPENING NIGHT AT FEATHERLITE FALL JAMBOREE

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. (Sept. 24) – A pit area packed with 107 of the nation's elite dirt modified drivers greeted race fans Thursday for opening night of the 11th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree at the Deer Creek Speedway.

Competitors from 17 different States converged on Spring Valley, Minn., to partake in the undisputed marquee event for America’s most talented open-wheel mud-slingers, with more than a quarter of the field trekking more than 700 miles from home to participate.

For Jason Cummins, however, there's no place like home.

Just a short one-hour drive from his residence in New Richland, Cummins earned the biggest win of his young career in topping first of three nights at the 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval.

Corey Dripps paced the first ten laps of the 30-lap Sunoco "A" Main before relinquishing the top spot to sixth-starting Cummins as they raced side by side to complete the eleventh orbit with a tight pack of pursuers on their tail racing high and low.

While Cummins quickly opened up a five-car-length lead, Al Hejna scooted around Dripps for second four laps later and began reeling in the leader.

With Hejna shadowing Cummins, lapped traffic came into play on lap 20. Cummins was forced to leave his preferred low line to get around a backmarker, and opened the door for Hejna to snag the top spot as they crossed beneath flagstand to complete lap 24.

Cummins fought back to lead the 25th lap before the lead duo swapped the lead again on laps 26 and 27. Meanwhile, Dripps made his way back into the picture to give the fans a thrilling three-way fight over the final three circuits.

In the end, Cummins was too much for his foes and he streaked beneath the checkered flags with a two-car-length cushion over Hejna and Dripps.

The win was worth $2,000 to 2009 Deer Creek Speedway USRA Modified track champion, and was his first at the Featherlite Fall Jamboree as well as career-first with the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour.

Thursday's triumph also placed the 28-year-old in elite company as one of 21 different Featherlite Fall Jamboree feature winners in 25 feature events.

Jon Tesch grabbed the fourth position at the drop of green flag and remained there for the duration of the caution-free 30-lapper to score his third straight top-5 finish in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship.

Zack VanderBeek finished fifth, with defending USMTS National Champion and Featherlite Fall Jamboree champ Tim Donlinger in sixth. Seventh went to 19th-starting Ryan Gustin, eighth was Terry Phillips, Tommy Myer took ninth and AFCO Pole winner Bob Timm pocketed he tenth-place paycheck.

Kelly Shryock maintained his lead in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship points battle, but saw his advantage become slightly smaller after finishing 17th in the main event. Jason Hughes earned the PBM Performance Products Hard Charger Award by racing from 25th on the 30-car starting grid and now trails Shryock by 89 markers (1480 to 1391) with two races remaining.

Gustin's impressive run in the nightcap kept him in third and brought him to within seven points of Hughes for the runner-up spot. VanderBeek broke a tie with Rodney Sanders and sits alone in fourth with 1339, while Sanders has 1323 and the last driver mathematically still alive for the title. Tesch is sixth in the rankings with 1278, followed by Donlinger (1256), Myer (1231), Dereck Ramirez (1208) and Hejna (1109).

ONE DOWN, TWO TO GO ...

Friday’s menu will kick off with the annual golf tournament at 10:00 a.m. at the Root River County Club in Spring Valley, followed by a second night of screaming on-track action. The USMTS Modifieds will again have a 30-car feature field, with the winner’s share of the purse doubled to $4,000 and a minimum of $350 going to each driver making the 40-ap main event. Fans, drivers, crews and families will put a lid on Friday’s festivities with the annual Karaoke Night … open to everybody. Gates open at 4:00 p.m. with racing scheduled to start at 6:00.

Saturday's super-sensational enormous explosive finale will feature the hottest dirt modified pilots in the nation battling for a spot in the 11th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree main event for the USMTS Modifieds. A field of 30 cars will start the main event three cars wide and ten rows deep as drivers battle for a $6,000 top prize and at least $700 just to take the green flag in the 50-lap finale. And if that wasn’t enough, non-qualifiers will have a chance at one of the 30 spots in the non-qualifiers race, which carries a $2,000 top prize and pays $300 to start. Fans can begin storming the gates at 3:00 p.m. and the mud starts flying at 5:00.

On Friday and Saturday, breakfast will be served by the Bear Creek Lutheran Church in the hospitality area from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. All proceeds benefit the Bear Creek Men’s Club. Open to all … you don’t want to miss this great home-cooked opportunity.

WISSOTA national points are being awarded all three nights for the WISSOTA Midwest Mods. Kyle Jumbeck picked up the $300 winner's share of the purse Thursday night. Friday will pay $400 to win and $70 to start and Saturday's Carroll's Corn "A" Main winner will earn $1,000 with $80 guaranteed to start the 24-car main event.

This year’s Featherlite Fall Jamboree will once again be the final trio of events in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's General Stores National Championship. Not only will an 11th Featherlite Fall Jamboree winner emerge, but the crowning of the USMTS National Champion will also occur after Saturday night’s finale.
