GUSTIN CHECKERS CHATEAU RACEWAY FOR SIXTH USMTS VICTORY OF 2009

LANSING, Minn. (Sept. 5) – Ryan Gustin grabbed the lead from Zack VanderBeek on lap 12, then held off a late-race charge by Kelly Shryock to score the victory Friday night in the 4th Annual Cedar River Race at the Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn.

The 18-year-old from Marshalltown, Iowa, pocketed $3,000 for topping event #11 of 18 in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship, and helped keep his hopes alive for the 2009 title.

Gustin's third win in the 'Hunt' was also his sixth win of the season and eighth overall since his first win a little more than a year ago.

Al Hejna led the first three laps from his outside front row starting spot, but VanderBeek wrestled the top spot away as they completed lap 4.

Gustin grabbed the runner-up spot two laps later and waged a spirited door-to-door battle with VanderBeek before securing the lead on lap 13 of the 40-lap Sunoco "A" Main.

Meanwhile, Shryock was clawing his way to the front from the eighth starting spot. The eight-time USMTS National Champion took advantage of a mid-race caution to dispose of VanderBeek, then pulled up behind Gustin to challenge for the lead.

Just 13 days ago, Gustin led Shryock from start to finish to take the win at the Upper Iowa Speedway, and the result was the same Friday night. This time, however, Shryock was able to pull alongside Gustin and the lead duo crossed beneath the flagstand side by side with two laps to go.

But Gustin was flawless over the final two circuits and led by a car-length at the checkered flag while Shryock settled for the runner-up paycheck for the second time in as many nights.

VanderBeek claimed the third position with surprise entrant Johnny Bone Jr. taking fourth and Corey Dripps rounding out the top-5 finishers.

Jason Hughes was unsuccessful in his bid to score a third straight main event victory, and finish sixth ahead of defending USMTS National Champion Tim Donlinger. Jon Tesch was eighth, Hejna held on for ninth and Tommy Myer finished tenth after starting 19th to earn his second PBM Performance Products Hard Charger Award in three nights.

Shryock continues atop the points standings in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship. Shryock now leads Hughes by 72 points (1043 to 971), while Gustin jumped into third with a four-point bulge (942 to 938) over Rodney Sanders. VanderBeek is fifth with 928, followed by Dereck Ramirez (857), Donlinger (844), Tesch (829), Myer (826) and Jason Krohn (798).
